Exploring Modern Heroism Based on ‘Mutual Beneficence’

The most noble action that a human can perform is heroism, and throughout history, humanity has bestowed the title of hero upon those who lived such extraordinary lives and then praised them from within that categorization. Traditionally, when discussing heroes, there has always been an archetype of a hero, with a dichotomy of ‘I’ or ‘We’ versus an opposing ‘other’ as an enemy that s…
A Basic Study on Welfare of Retired Clergy in Daesoon Jinrihoe
Korea has rapidly become an aging society, and this phenomenon is found not only in common population but also in many religious circles. In this context, interest in the welfare of retired clergy members is increasing, and some religious organizations are trying to devise and perform rules and/or policies that ensure a secure post-retirement life for their clergy. However, the welfare benefits differ from one religion to another according to the…
Household-specific physical activity levels and energy intakes according to the presence of metabolic syndrome in Korean young adults
We found significant association among low PA levels, high energy intake, and MetS components in young Korean adults, but with patterns differing according to household type. Energy intake was higher in young adults with than those without MetS, who lived in multi-person households, while young adults with MetS who lived alone had lower PA levels and lower energy intake than those without MetS. These findings highlight the need for different appr…

The debate on the treatment of animals has accelerated as a social issue in the West since the 1970s. In 1975, Peter Singers argued in his book, Animal Liberation, that speciesism should be banned. This led to an explosion in research on animal welfare in the philosophical and social sciences. Following Singer, Tom Regan suggested considering the animal rights as being on the same level as human rights. Their arguments were that animals should be…
Effects of Glycyrrhizin Pre-Treatment on Transient Ischemic Brain Injury in Mice
Background: Ischemia-induced brain damage is the leading cause of adult disability and the fifth leading cause of death, and thus, the development of anti-apoptotic neuro-protective therapeutic agents is viewed as an attractive developmental strategy. Glycyrrhizin is the main sweet component in licorice and has a number of pharmacological activities, which include neuro-protective, anti-fungal, and anti-cariogenic activities. This study was under…
Chihō shōmetsu
This book is a compilation of the findings of the Japan Policy Council’s Subcommittee on Depopulation Issues, which generated widespread public interest with its announcement of a list of ‘municipalities at risk of disappearance’ in 2014. The authors employ a wealth of data and distinctive approaches to explicate the mechanisms of the population decline problem in Japan and to offer policy proposals for addressing the problem. Detailed analysis b…
