  • The crime and challenged sovereignty conundrum in the Caribbean

    Open Access•Ivelaw L Griffith•ARTICLE•The Round Table•2026

Sadly, the persistence and spread of crime and violence across the Caribbean region has become the harsh reality of the entire Caribbean. These factors have led the Caribbean area to experience significant trauma in relation to safety and security, as well as economic and social conditions. Crucially, too, the crime and violence have broader implications. This article examines some of the extant conditions and implications, by providing a contemp…

  • Oil and climate change in small states

    Open Access•Ivelaw L Griffith•ARTICLE•International Journal Canada s…•2023

This article challenges Daniel Yergin's proposition that climate mobilization, and not energy security, is the main driver of contemporary international engagement. I examine the realities of Guyana and Suriname, two small states in the Guyana-Suriname Basin (GSB) that give equal weight to energy security and climate issues. The two have oil reserves that together comprise more than 16 billion barrels. Guyana and Suriname are also in Wet Neighbou…

  • Democracy and Human Rights in the Caribbean

Ivelaw L Griffith, Betty Nelly Sedoc-Dahlberg•EDITOR•BOOK•Democracy and Human Rights in the…•2018

The Caribbean, like regions elsewhere, is caught in what has been called democracy's global "Third Wave." In this volume, contributors examine the nature of democratization in the region together with its accessory, human rights. The emphasis is to extend the analysis and debates beyond political democracy and civil and political rights to economic democracy and economic and social rights

  • The Quest for Security in the Caribbean

Ivelaw L Griffith•BOOK•Quest for Security in the Caribbean•2015

This comprehensive work on security in the English-speaking Caribbean, offers a wealth of information about the history, politics, economics and geography of the entire region. The author examines security problems in the region as a geopolitical unit, not on a selective case-study basis, as is usually done. He assesses Caribbean security within a theoretical framework where four factors are critical: perceptions of the political elites; capabili…

Open Access•I Griffith, Ivelaw L Griffith•EDITOR•BOOK•Political Economy of Drugs in the…•2000

This volume does four things. Firstly it examines the nexus between the illegal narcotics enterprise as a social phenomenon and political economy as a scholarly issue area. Secondly it explores the re

  • Political change, democracy, and human rights in Guyana

    Ivelaw L Griffith•ARTICLE•Third World Quarterly•1997•Cited by: 3

The annals of Guyana's political history will surely record 1992 as an historic year, for that year was a milestone in the transition from authoritarian politics to democratic politics. Also significant was the emergence from the political wilderness of Cheddie Jagan. Having first entered politics in 1946, Jagan was ousted from power by the British in 1953, and again in 1964, in collusion with the USA, because of his communist orientation. Ironic…

  • Caribbean Security

    Open Access•Ivelaw L Griffith•ARTICLE•Latin American Research Review•1995

During the 1980s, the major security themes that Caribbean scholars studied were geopolitics, militarization, intervention, and instability. The interface between domestic and international politics led to linkages among some of these themes and their domestic, regional, and international dimensions. For example, the militarization of Grenada in the 1980s was predicated on the need to defend the Grenadian revolution against foreign intervention a…

The death of forbes burnham in August 1985 and the passing of power to Hugh Desmond Hoyte have produced dramatic changes in Guyana, South America's only English-speaking republic. Some of these have involved: (1) privatization of the public sector, (2) abolition of overseas voting, (3) negotiations with the International Monetary Fund (IMF), (4) rapprochement with the United States, plus (5) an agreement that observers - including former Presiden…
