Zamil-Koba 3 Site
The article presents the results of a complex interdisciplinary study of the Late Mesolithic cultural layer of the Zamil-Koba 3 — the only “pure” single-layer Final Mesolithic site in the Mountainous Crimea. New geomorphological, palynological, paleozoological, paleobotanical and malacological data, as well as radiocarbon dates on organic samples from hearths, were obtained as a result of the archaeological study of the site. The characteristics …
The Beginning of the Excavations at the Gegalashur 1 (North-Eastern Caucasus)
The early Paleolithic archaeological sites of the North-Eastern Caucasus comprise three distinct groups: Ainikab (Ainikab 1 and 2), Mukhkai (Mukhkai 1, 2, and 2a), and Gegalashur (Gegalashur 1, 2, and 3). These sites are situated within the central mountainous region of Central Dagestan, at an approximate elevation of 1500-1600 meters above sea level. They were initially discovered by A.A. Amirkhanov between 2005 and 2007. In 2023, an expedition …
Mesolithic layers of the Zamil-Koba 2 site in the Crimea
The site Zamil-Koba 2 is situated in the Bakhchisarai district of the Republic of the Crimea. This is a small grotto in the northern wall of the Zamil gorge. The site was discovered by D.A. Krainov in 1935, and the total area of the grotto (288 square meters) was excavated by Krainov in 1937-1938. The bottom part of the sediments contained two Mesolithic layers which were attributed by Krainov to the "Azilian" and "Tardenoisian". The collections …
Experimental and traceological studies of arrowheads in the Mesolithic of the Mountainous Crimea
Traceological analysis of all microliths from multilayer sites Zamil-Koba 1 and 2, Alimovskiy rockshelter, Tash-Air 1, Kukrek revealed arrowheads of various types. Transverse arrowheads prevail in layers of the early phase of the Shan-Koba culture. Long segments and trapezes were used for this purpose. Oblique bladed arrowheads with a barb make a series. Long segments fixed in an oblique slot at the end of an arrow shaft were used as such arrowhe…
Weapons from the Upper Mesolithic Layer of Alimovskiy Rockshelter in the Crimea
The article presents weapons from the upper Mesolithic layer of the Alimovskiy rockshelter excavated by A. D. Stolyar in 1955. The collection is kept in the State Hermitage museum. The trench excavated in 2022 by M. G. Zhilin confirmed the stratigraphy exposed in the eastern part of the 1955 trench and enriched the archaeological collection. The site contains four Mesolithic layers dated to the Early, Middle, Late and Final Mesolithic. About one …
Spatial organization of the lower layer of the Zamil-Koba 1 site in the Crimea
The site in grotto Zamil-Koba 1 in the South-Western Crimea was discovered and excavated by D.A. Krainov in 1935-1937. Two Stone Age cultural layers were investigated. The bottom layer belongs to the Shan-Koba culture and is dated to the Allerød period. It is totally excavated inside the grotto. The bottom layer of the site is characterized by clear spatial structure including a hearth, bone accumulation, a workshop and a sleeping place inside a …

Introduction. The Nubian expedition of the Lomonosov MSU carried out survey in the Onib Depression in December 2022. The survey revealed several surface scatters and two stone age sites Onib-1 and Onib-Outcrop. Materials and methods. The materials for the article were artifacts (stone tools and debitage, fragments of ceramics) discovered at the surface scatters and sites as well as samples for OSL dating, loss-on-ignition and pollen analysis take…
Pressure Flakers of Late Neolithic Forest Hunter-Gatherer-Fishers of Eastern Europe and Their Remote Counterparts
The remarkable group of tools was detected among the hunter-gatherer-fishers’ archaeological materials of the East European Plain central part dated around 3500–2700 BC. The so-called “crooked items” were initially interpreted as ritual phallic depictions, but now after conducting a more detailed analysis of their morphology, technology, and use-wear, it became clear that we deal with pressure flakers used to process flint tools. The most astonis…
Weapons from the Lower Layer of the Zamil-Koba 1 Rock Shelter in the Crimea
The article analyzes weapons from the lower cultural layer of the Zamil-Koba 1 rock shelter in the South-Western Crimea excavated by D. A. Krainov in 1935-1937. The collection is stored at the State Historical Museum in Moscow. Lithic artefacts from the lower layer are typical for the Final Palaeolithic - Early Mesolithic Shan-Koba culture of the Mountainous Crimea. The faunal assemblage is dominated by red deer and wild boar remains. Weapons and…
Stone Age sites in Wadi al-Allaqi (Upper Egypt)
Unpublished materials related to several open–type localities investigated by participants of the Nubian Archaeological Expedition of the USSR Academy of Sciences during the 1962-1963 season in the Wadi al-Allaqi area were found in the Palaeolithic Department of the Institute for the History of Material Culture of the Russian Academy of Sciences. Technical and typological analysis of stone artefacts allows us to attribute the collections under di…
