Stealing fire from heaven’: Odette du Puigaudeau and French nuclear colonialism in the Algerian Sahara
By wanting to steal fire from heaven, the men of today will lose the world'so commented the French ethnologist, Odette du Puigaudeau (1894-1991), as she reflected on her opposition to French nuclear weapons tests in the Algerian Sahara. Odette, a Breton known for her field research in Mauritania, was unable to prevent the tests, with 17 detonations taking place between 1960 and 1966 near the oasis town of Reggane and in the Hoggar Massif. It focuses in particular on the use of scientific aid and development as a means by which West African states could be re-assured and won over to British diplomacy. This was calculated to appeal to ideas of modernity on the eve of Niger…

From one perspective, it challenges histories of peace movements in Britain, which have laboured under approaches and assumptions centred on London. From another, it demonstrates the role of movements for nuclear disarmament in the emergence of a ‘left of …
What Was the West
I The West was awesome and aberrant. Looking back on its 500-year-long run, it is obvious that human nature could not permanently bear such dynamism as was produced by the concatenation of its core concepts. Human nature is resilient, but, as T. S. Eliot noted, “mankind cannot bear too much freedom.” In sum, the cause of the West's collapse was its derogation of education in the humanities, to the point where it no longer understood, or even reme…
