  • Research efforts and gaps in the assessment of forest system resilience

Open Access•Sara Anamaghi, Massoud Behboudian et al.•ARTICLE•AMBIO•2026

This study investigates how the seven core resilience principles are integrated into assessments of forest system resilience to natural or human-induced disturbances across engineering, ecological, and social-ecological resilience concepts. Following PRISMA guidelines, a literature search in the Web of Science database using the keywords “resilience”, “forest” and “ecosystem services” yielded 1828 studies, of which 330 met the selection criteria.…

  • Breaching planetary boundaries

Open Access•Fabian Stenzel, Liad Ben Uri et al.•ARTICLE•One Earth•2025

Mapping ecosystem integrity is a key task of the planetary-boundaries framework. Two new control variables have been suggested for the core planetary boundary for functional biosphere integrity: (1) human appropriation of net primary production (HANPP) and (2) a metric for ecological disruption (EcoRisk). However they have not yet been mapped spatially and temporally explicitly. Here, we use simulations with the dynamic global vegetation model LP…

  • A software package for assessing terrestrial planetary boundaries

Open Access•Dieter Gerten, Johanna Braun et al.•ARTICLE•One Earth•2025

Planetary boundary (PB) assessments are hampered by the lack of a generic computation tool. Here we developed an R-based, open source software package, boundaries, that can calculate and visualize the spatiotemporal status of different PBs. Building on outputs from a biosphere model we demonstrate how the tool provides transparent and robust evaluation of PBs for land-system change, biosphere integrity, biogeochemical flows and freshwater change.…

  • A protein transition can free up land to tap vast energy and negative emission potentials

    Open Access•Oscar Rueda, José M Mogollón et al.•ARTICLE•One Earth•2024

  • Freshwater requirements of large-scale bioenergy plantations for limiting global warming to 1.5 °C

Open Access•Fabian Stenzel, Dieter Gerten et al.•ARTICLE•Environmental Research Letters•2019

Limiting mean global warming to well below 2 °C will probably require substantial negative emissions (NEs) within the 21st century. To achieve these, bioenergy plantations with subsequent carbon capture and storage (BECCS) may have to be implemented at a large scale. Irrigation of these plantations might be necessary to increase the yield, which is likely to put further pressure on already stressed freshwater systems. Conversely, the potential of…
