Is er leven na de babyboomers
In this article, we study trends in secularization and spiritualization in the Netherlands in the period 1981-2017. Using data from the European Values Study, we first show that traditional religiosity is on the decline: the level of church membership, church visits, and trust in the church decreased as well as traditional religious beliefs such as belief in a personal god. The cohorts born between 1940 and 1960 (the babyboom generation) triggere…
Religion and Civil Society in Europe
Religion is back again in Europe after never having been gone. It is manifest in the revival of religious institutions and traditions in former communist countries, in political controversies about the relationship between the church(es) and the state and about the freedom of religion and the freedom to criticize religion, and in public unease about religious minorities. This book is about religion and civil society in Europe. It moves from gener…
Religious Socialization and Church Attendance in the Netherlands from 1983 to 2007
The authors explore the effect of a religious upbringing on church attendance later in life. To this purpose, people who had been interviewed in 1983 as secondary students about their upbringing as well as other characteristics, were interviewed again in 2007 about the same topics. Comparisons between the 1983 and the 2007 data reveal that church attendance dropped significantly among these people during this period. Furthermore, it is shown that…
Delusions and Qualitative Confusions
In this article we describe the application of a dialogic collaborative process (DCP) to the exploration of issues arising from our own interview-based research in populations prone to delusions. We used the DCP to investigate and develop a shared understanding of ethical and epistemological tensions and their potential influence on the research process. Although our meaning making involved agreement to disagree in relation to specific issues, we…
Images of God in Adolescence
God images of Dutch youngsters were investigated in two research projects. Because previous studies, which applied precoded questions, did not seem to elucidate the way people construct their image of God, a combination of precoded and open questions was used. On the basis of content analysis, a hierarchical model was developed in which the attributes of God were distinguished from the acts of God in various domains. Most respondents did not seem…
Impact of Religious Socialization in the Family
In 1983 a survey was held among Dutch high school pupils (N = 3532), aged 14 to 18 years, which provides a number of indications concerning the secularization thesis, a theory widely discussed in present day sociology and theology. Results which are related to one distinct aspect of this thesis are reported, namely results concerning the presumed incompetence of the parental family in modern western society, such as the Netherlands, to influence …
A Content Analysis of the Praying Practices of Dutch Youth

Praying Practices
There is very little empirical research about prayer. No convincing psychological theory exists, nor agreement about definitions and basic concepts. In the research which we conducted, open-ended questions were used to detect the meaning of prayer for modern youth. A computerized procedure (TexTable) was used to analyse the answers. The results show that the common prayer of youth can be summarized in one sentence, composed of 7 structural elemen…
