ʿAbd Al-Jabbār and Bāqillānī on the Meaning of Miracles (Muʿjizāt)
This article presents the technical terminology, concepts, and theological principles developed by Bāqillānī and ʿAbd al-Jabbār in Kitāb al-Bayān and the Mughnī (respectively). It traces the convergences and divergences in their approaches to the word muʿjiz and describes the parallel methodological processes through which they critique postulates established by the “language users or experts” ( ahl al-lugha ). I argue that we can better understa…
The Muʿtazila on Covenantal Theology
This article examines how three leading exegetes of the Muʿtazilite school tradition – ʿAbd al-Jabbār (d. 415/1025), Jishumī (d. 494/1101), and Zamakhsharī (d. 538/1144) – conceptualized the Qurʾānic idea of covenant in divergent ways. Rāzī
Fakhr al-Din al-Razi (1148 - 1210) wrote prolifically in the disciplines of theology, Quranic exegesis, and philosophy. He composed treatises on jurisprudence, medicine, physiognomy, astronomy, and astrology. His body of work marks a momentous turning point in the Islamic tradition and his influence within the post-classical Islamic tradition is striking. After his death in 1210 his works became standard textbooks in Islamic institutions of highe…
Fakhr al-Dīn al-Rāzī on the Soul ( al-nafs ) and Spirit ( al-rūḥ )
This article aims to illustrate how al-Rāzī forges his doctrine on the soul in Mafātīḥ al-ghayb. It investigates al-Rāzī’s analysis of the soul's nature, its generation, and its attachment to the body by examining his exegesis of key Qur'anic verses. It analyses the ways that al-Rāzī interprets key cosmological terms from the Qur'an (including ‘soul’, ‘vital spirit’, ‘God's command’, and ‘power’), and provides examples of his practical applicatio…
Muʿtazilite Aspects of Faḫr al-Dīn al-Rāzī’s Thought1
This paper examines Faḫr al-Dīn al-Rāzī’s methodology in kalām and tafsīr by investigating al-Rāzī’s method of taʾwīl . It situates al-Rāzī’s methodology with respect to the Muʿtazila and falsafa , two trends that greatly influenced al-Rāzī. It proposes that al-Rāzī, who is generally considered the leading Sunnī theologian and exegete after the death of al-Ġazālī, adopted methods and ideas from the Muʿtazila and that he effectively synthesized th…
