The Association of Cardiometabolic Risk Factors in Parent–Child Dyads in Guam
The Western Pacific region, including Guam, has the highest prevalence of prediabetes and type 2 diabetes mellitus, which are associated with metabolic syndrome (MetS)-a cluster of preventable risk factors. Children with parents with MetS are likely to develop MetS in the future. MetS prevalence in Guam and the impact of MetS on children are unknown. Data from the Pacific Islands Cohort on Cardiometabolic Health (PICCAH) study in Guam were analyz…
Disparities in Colorectal Cancer Incidence among Asian and Pacific Islander Populations in Guam, Hawai’i, and the United States
Colorectal cancer (CRC) ranks among the three most common cancers in Guam (GU), Hawai'i (HI), and the mainland United States (US). CRC prevalence in these areas is high among Filipinos, and indigenous CHamorus and Native Hawaiians; however, data on these populations are frequently aggregated in epidemiological studies, which can mask true CRC disparities. We examined CRC cumulative incidence rates (CIRs) among CHamorus in GU, Filipinos in GU, HI,…
Barriers, Facilitators, and Strategies for Developing a Culturally Informed Lifestyle Intervention for Native Hawaiian, CHamoru, and Filipino Breast Cancer Survivors
Breast cancer disproportionately impacts Native Hawaiian, CHamoru, and Filipino women. Few culturally informed interventions addressing breast cancer survivors exist and none have been developed or tested specifically for Native Hawaiian, CHamoru, and Filipino women. This study aimed to conduct focus groups with Native Hawaiian, CHamoru, and Filipino women previously diagnosed with breast cancer to inform future research in Guam and Hawai'i. Conv…
Perceived Barriers and Benefits of Covid-19 Testing among Pacific Islanders on Guam
Pacific Islanders residing in the U.S. Affiliated Pacific Islands have had among the highest COVID-19-associated morbidity and mortality rates in the U.S. To reduce this disparity, we conducted a study to increase the reach and uptake of COVID-19 testing in Guam. Participants, who completed a pre-survey on demographics, health status, history of COVID-19 testing and vaccination, access to COVID-19 testing, sources of COVID-19 information, and kno…
Pacific Islands Cohort on Cardiometabolic Health Study
The PICCAH Study is designed to establish the baseline of a generational epidemiologic cohort with an emphasis on cardiometabolic risk, and to better understand the extent of DM and CVD conditions and related risk factors of those living in the USAPI jurisdictions of Guam, Pohnpei, and Palau. This study also serves to further build research capacity in the underserved USAPI Region
Systematic Review of Prevalence of Young Child Overweight and Obesity in the United States–Affiliated Pacific Region Compared With the 48 Contiguous States
We estimated overweight and obesity (OWOB) prevalence of children in US-Affiliated Pacific jurisdictions (USAP) of the Children’s Healthy Living Program compared with the contiguous United States. We searched peer-reviewed literature and government reports (January 2001–April 2014) for OWOB prevalence of children aged 2 to 8 years in the USAP and found 24 sources. We used 3 articles from National Health and Nutrition Examination Surveys for compa…
