  • Indefinite subjects in Mandarin Chinese

    Open Access•Xiaowen Nie, Feng-Hsi Liu•ARTICLE•Chinese Language and Discourse An…•2021

Indefinite subjects in Mandarin Chinese are dis-preferred or restricted according to previous studies although they do exist in natural data. In this study we examine two issues: when they are used and why they are used. The first issue is best answered by looking at the information status of indefinite subjects. We adopt the framework of givenness and newness developed by Prince (1992) and revised by Birner’s ( 2004 , 2006 ). We find that althou…

  • Second Language Acquisition of Aspect in Mandarin Chinese

    Feng-Hsi Liu•CHAPTER•Key Issues in Chinese As a Second…•2017

Acquiring the aspectual system of a second language (L2) is a challenging task for all L2 learners. Research in second language acquisition (SLA) of aspect in Chinese does not have a long history. Work began only in the 1990s, following the research on L2 aspect acquisition in English and European languages. This chapter provides an overview of this research. It reviews major studies that have been conducted on L2 aspect in Chinese. To understand…

  • The bei passive and its discourse motivations

    Feng-Hsi Liu•ARTICLE•Chinese Language and Discourse An…•2011

This study examines the variation between the active and the bei passive in Mandarin Chinese from a probabilistic perspective. The variables considered include discourse continuity factors and adversity. Two different models were built for the active-agentless passive variation and the active-agentive passive variation. Four factors were found to have significant effect: agent thematicity, patient thematicity, adversity, and referential distance.…

  • Word order variation and ba sentences in Chinese

    Feng-Hsi Liu•ARTICLE•Studies in Language•2007

Despite extensive research on ba sentences in Chinese, the issue of when ba sentences are used in discourse has received little attention. This study examines the word order variation involving ba sentences by comparing three word orders: the canonical postverbal form, the ba form, and the topicalized preposed form. I show that the choice of the ba form depends on multiple factors, including information status, weight and topicality. The ba form …
