Retouched Burin-Cores in the Earliest Upper Palaeolithic of Kostenki 17, Cultural Layer II
Multifaceted burins on truncation represent a key category within the lithic assemblage of II cultural layer of Kostenki 17 — a unique industry of the initial stage of the Upper Palaeolithic. Despite their fundamental significance, these artefacts have not previously been the subject of a dedicated study. This article presents, for the first time, the results of a comprehensive technological, typological and use-wear analysis of burins on truncat…
Primary Flaking Strategies of the Late Upper Palaeolithic industry with scalene triangles of the Northern Tien Shan
This paper presents the first results of a technological analysis of the lithic industry from cultural layer 4/3 of the multilayer Upper Palaeolithic site of Rakhat (Northern Tien Shan, south-eastern Kazakhstan). Layer 4/3 belongs to a group of cultural deposits dating to the early part of the late Upper Palaeolithic (~20,300–19,300 14C yr BP) that are characterised by the early presence of scalene triangles. Taphonomic and spatial analysis show …

The challenges of identifying intentional blade fragmentation in Paleolithic industries
Fragmented tools and blanks are widely found in the assemblages of the Stone age sites. It is therefore vital that researchers are equipped with the necessary knowledge to assess the nature of such fragmentation. However, the available data on this issue is limited and somewhat contradictory, which leaves this important question unanswered at the moment. The primary objective of the current study was ascertaining whether the identification of inte…
Towards Verification of the Structural Characteristics of Middle Palaeolithic Keilmessers from Sukhaya Mechetka
The article is devoted to the study of one of the types of Keilmessers, the Volgograd-type knife, from the Micoquian/KMG assemblage of the Sukhaya Mechetka site. For the first time, 3D geometric morphometrics method is used to study the morphology of stone artifacts within the framework of the structural approach, combined with the analysis of flaking systems. The methods used are aimed at highlighting the seriality of individual elements in the …
Development of the microlithic technology in the Early Upper Palaeolithic of Kostenki (European Russia)
This article presents the results of the typological analysis of Early Upper Paleolithic non-geometric microliths from the Kostenki site cluster. A relationship between certain types of microlith and the age of different Kostenki sites was established. Based on stratigraphic correlation and radiocarbon dating, three chronological groups corresponding to three stratigraphic units are distinguished: a) the Lower Humic Bed, b) the level of the Campa…
Objects made of organic materials from cultural layer II of Kostenki 17 (Spitsynskaya)
Kostenki 17 (Spitsynskaya)
This paper describes the results of 2017-2020 fieldwork at the Upper Palaeolithic site of Kostenki 17 (Spitsynskaya). This work established the presence of five new horizons of finds, in addition to the two cultural layers known since the 1950s. Given the thickness of the Upper Humic Bed, it is clear that the horizons of finds are separated by sterile layers, and correspond to the existence of different sites on this part of the promontory. Despi…
