Open Access•Christina Shanley, Lauren Swift et al.•ARTICLE•Anthropologiai Közlemények•2026

Background: Hegra (Mada’in Salih) was the second largest city in the Nabataean Kingdom, inhabited from around 100 BCE–200 CE. More than 100 monumental tombs remain at Hegra as conserved evidence of the ancient civilisation. Excavations of Nabataean tombs have typically revealed commingled and fragmented skeletal remains resulting from reuse and looting, which hinders the exploration of individual experiences of health and disease. Objective: This…

Open Access•Zuzana Obertová, Inga Siebke et al.•ARTICLE•Forensic Sciences Research•2024

Survey of European facial examiners focused on accreditation-relevant topics.Respondents from accredited facial image comparison units differed from those of nonaccredited units in terms of better awareness of standard operating procedures, uptake of intra- and interlaboratory testing, and the consistent use of standard methods and regular method validation.A better understanding of accreditation requirements and best practices recommendations wo…

  • Bioarchaeological analysis of human skeletal remains associated with the wrecking of the retourschip “Batavia”, 1629: Burials BIB 11–14

    Open Access•Daniel Franklin, Ambika Flavel et al.•ARTICLE•Australian Archaeology•2024•References: 6

The voyage and subsequent mutiny associated with the wrecking of the VOC retourschip “Batavia” (1629) in the Houtman Abrolhos, off the western coast of Australia, represents one of the earliest documented European encounters with Australia. Much of our understanding of events surrounding the mutiny is detailed in a rich historical record, supplemented in the modern period with targeted archaeological research. Most recently, a large-scale multidi…

  • Sex estimation of frontal sinus volume from computed tomography scans in a Western Australian adult population

Renitta Rajan Thottungal, Zuzana Obertová et al.•ARTICLE•Anthropologischer Anzeiger•2024•Cited by: 1

Sexual dimorphism in the TFSV was tested, and the accuracy of the Michel et al. (2015) formulae was calculated. Population-specific regression equations were also produced. There was a significant difference between the mean TFSV in males and females. The classification accuracy derived from the Michel et al. (2015) formulae was 59.6%. The WA-specific logistic regression analysis yielded an accuracy of 57.2%. The low accuracy rates preclude the u…

  • Slavic Mythology Lost in Fantasy: Literary Adaptations of Slavic Beliefs in Andrzej Sapkowski’s and Juraj Červenák’s Novels

    Open Access•Zuzana Obertová•ARTICLE•Narodna umjetnost•2022•Cited by: 1•References: 1

Slavic myths increasingly survive in people’s consciousness as supernatural elements or as literary characters rather than as real beliefs in their existence. Adult readers in Poland and Slovakia, for example, encounter Slavic supernatural beings in the fantasy literature book series such as Wiedźmin by Andrzej Sapkowski and Černokňažník by Juraj Červenák; however, literature cannot be expected to portray superstitions and demons in the same way …

PURPOSE: To examine prostate-specific antigen (PSA) screening patterns and outcomes in rural and urban men in New Zealand. METHODS: Men aged 40+ years were identified from 18 rural and 13 urban general practices across the Midland Cancer Network region. Computerized practice records were cross-referenced with community laboratory data to ascertain the number and level of PSA tests undertaken in 2010 and 3 years prior. For men with an elevated PSA…

Dörte Cattaneo Nohrden, Peter Gabriel et al.•ARTICLE•Anthropologischer Anzeiger•2010

Recruiting test persons is crucial in many scientific fields. The recognition of motivators or barriers to survey participation may support the design and recruitment strategy of future studies. The recruitment of under age test persons is very complex and sensitive. This paperpresents and analyses the experiences in recruitment of female juveniles (10-18 years old) in Germany, Italy and Lithuania within the context of an EU funded project concer…

The relationship between the occurrence of orbital and enamel lesions was analysed by focusing on the age-specific distribution, and on its influence on demographic parameters. Both features were found in 1…
