  • The Cuman Statues in Museums of the Central Russian Upland

Arthur Chubur, Valerii Guryanov•ARTICLE•Stratum plus Archaeology and…•2025

The authors consider the probability of Cuman camps existing in the forest-steppe strip of the Central Russian Upland, using the presence of stone sculptures as an indicator. They analyze the origin (of the local finds and the ones brought in the 19th century from the southern steppes) and the typology of sculptures exhibited in the museums of the region and known from historiography. Stone sculptures not previously included in the datasets are o…

  • Ceramic Animals of Forest Settlements

Valerii Guryanov, Arthur Chubur et al.•ARTICLE•Stratum plus Archaeology and…•2023

The authors believe that the clay zoomorphic plastic figurines from the Early Iron Age settlements of the forest zone (the areas of the Yukhnovskaya, Milogradskaya, Verkhneokskaya and Dyakovskaya cultures) are not votive elements of agrarian cults but children’s toys. The authors address the finds of ceramic painted eggs in the Kurgan burials of the Eastern Slavs of the 11th — the beginning of the 12th centuries on the space from the left bank of the Dnieper to Northeast Russia. As a rule, painted eggs are an attribute of child burials. Currently, such finds are interpreted as children’s rattles or as protective amulets. However, given the semantics and the meaning of the egg in the beliefs and myths, this in…

  • Ornitomorphic Plots on Radial Temporal Rings

Evgenii Shinakov, Arthur Chubur•ARTICLE•Stratum plus Archaeology and…•2022•Cited by: 1

Radial temporal rings (earrings, head pendants) serve for some direct aesthetic purposes, but also for ethnic identification, status-ranking and have a symbolic-sacred value. The article addresses one of the least studied group in this category of jewelry. Dents on the inside of the handle here are replaced by some cast ornitomorphic figures. A typological correlation analysis made it possible to highlight 3 insulated variants and 4 types. The de…

  • Fauna in Art and Reality

Evgenii A Shinakov, Arthur Chubur et al.•ARTICLE•Stratum plus Archaeology and…•2021

The authors aimed to compare the real animal world of a particular region and its reflection in the minds of people of different historical eras, represented in works of applied art and small plastic arts. The choice of the Middle Desna region was determined by its transitional character for Eastern Europe in almost all historical and archaeological periods (both in physical-geographical and ethno-cultural aspects). The authors considered materia…
