Open Access•Adriana Chauvin, Miguel Ángel Fano et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Archaeological Science…•2026•References: 9

Lithic industry provides key information for understanding the Magdalenian occupation in Zon IV. • A technological analysis of the retouched and unretouched artefacts is carried out. • The study of the raw materials suggests a long-distance circulation. • Technological and raw material analysis reinforces the interpretation of symbolic activities in Zone IV The lithic assemblage recovered from Zone IV in the Lower Gallery at La Garma (Cantabria, …

  • Changes in lithic raw material and technological management during the Mesolithic

    Open Access•Diego Herrero-Alonso, Natividad Fuertes-Prieto et al.•ARTICLE•Archaeological and Anthropological…•2025•Cited by: 1•References: 50

This study investigates the lithic industry at the Mesolithic shell midden site of El Mazo (Andrín, Asturias), on the Asturian coastline in Northern Iberia, focusing on resource management, production strategies, and mobility patterns of the last hunter-gatherer-fishers. El Mazo provides a unique opportunity to examine lithic resource use across the Early-Middle Holocene transition, with a particular emphasis on the dynamic of the 8.2 ka climate …

[En] Flint was the most widely used lithic raw material in Europe in Prehistory and, more specifically, was a fundamental resource in the economic and social networks of hunter-gatherer groups in the Cantabrian Spain during the Upper Palaeolithic. The undeniable preference for it compared with other resources was due to a series of factors, such as its easy availability because of its abundance and wide distribution of outcrops, and its excellent…

  • The crystalline quartz-rich raw material from Olduvai Gorge (Tanzania)

    Open Access•Antonio Tarriño, Antonio Tarriño-Vinagre et al.•ARTICLE•Archaeological and Anthropological…•2023•Cited by: 6•References: 173

The major raw material documented in the archeological sites of Olduvai Gorge (Tanzania) is a geological material with crystalline appearance, white or colorless, foliated or seemingly massive only at the outcrop scale, with a very high quartz-rich composition, and apparently of metamorphic origin, named by us in this paper: Crystalline Quartz-rich Raw Material (CQRM). Since the early days of research in Olduvai Gorge, a long-lasting terminologic…

  • Neolithic Flint Mines of Treviño (Basque-Cantabrian Basin, Western Pyrenees, Spain)

    Open Access•Antonio Tarriño, Antonio Tarriño-Vinagre et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Lithic Studies•2014•Cited by: 7•References: 3

English:The prehistoric Treviño flint mine complex is located in the Sierra de Araico-Cucho (Berantevilla, Alava - Condado de Treviño, Burgos), inside the lacustrine-palustrine Cenozoic (Aquitanian, Miocene) materials of the South-Pyrenean syncline of the Basque-Cantabrian Basin. It is a landscape unit constituted by a set of carbonated layers with abundant nodular and stratiform silicifications. The extraction mining works (often referred to as …

  • The Middle to Later Stone Age Technological Transition in East Africa. New Data from Mumba Rockshelter Bed V (Tanzania) and their Implications for the Origin of Modern Human Behavior

Fernando Diez-Martín, Luis Luque et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of African Archaeology•2009

Recent re-excavation of Mumba Rockshelter unearthed an unbiased lithic sample from Bed V. Technological analysis has permitted a reinterpretation of the so-called Mumba Industry, a transitional industry between Middle and Later Stone Ages originally defined by Mehlman (1989). Our data confirm Mehlman’s observation that the “evolutionary” markers in Mumba Bed V are basically typological. However, our study differs from his in that we classify all …
