  • Musical Mirrors (Story in Dance)

    Tatiana Kuznetsova•ARTICLE•Stratum plus Archaeology and…•2025

About 40 years ago I discovered the presence of “rattle mirrors” in nomadic barrows. There are now known 6 musical mirrors of the 5th —4th c. BC found in the Altai and Urals: Pazyryk, Lokot-4a, Rogozikha-1, Mechetsai, Middle Urals, Yakovlevka-2. Rattle mirrors are composite structures of two riveted bronze disks and a side handle mounted on a flat pin extending from the disks. Between the disks, in the cavity of the rollers, there were pieces of …

  • Steppe Scythian Sites of the 7th-3rd Centuries BC in the Northern Black Sea Area (on the classification of funerary structures)

    Tatiana Kuznetsova•ARTICLE•Stratum plus Archaeology and…•2024

The 7th to 3rd century BC funeral and funerary rites of the steppe Scythian population was a major focus of V.S. Olkhovsky's work. He studied the Scythian sites in the region, which covers the southern part of Herodotus' "Scythian square," including the Crimean Peninsula, the Taurica mountains, and the Cimmerian Bosporus. Olkhovsky provided a chronology and classification of burial structures based on 1,857 burials, reflecting their most signific…

  • Philosophical Problems in the Theoretical Heritage of K.D. Ushinsky (to the 200th Anniversary of the Birth)

Tatiana Kuznetsova, Andrei L Andreev et al.•ARTICLE•Voprosy Filosofii•2023

The article provides a historical and philosophical analysis of the theoretical heritage of one of the most significant figures of the “golden age” of Russian culture, K.D. Ushinsky. Ushinsky entered intellectual history primarily as a “teacher of teachers”, the founder of scientific pedagogy and philosophy of education in Russia. At the same time, he paid great attention to the philosophical substantiation of his views on education, and a num…

  • Items with an Undefined Function and Magic of Mirrors

    Tatiana Kuznetsova•ARTICLE•Stratum plus Archaeology and…•2022

This paper deals with the discussion about the item, which is named in the literature as the Sauromatian “mirror”. A round disk (with a flat side handle) shows a corrugation on its two sides. The purpose of such a thing that does not have a reflective surface is difficult to determine. However, it cannot be called a “mirror” due to corrugation, so the function of the object has not yet been determined. Having identified an object from the Oguz ba…

  • The origins and spread of domestic horses from the Western Eurasian steppes

Open Access•Pablo Librado, Naveed Khan et al.•ARTICLE•Nature•2021

Domestication of horses fundamentally transformed long-range mobility and warfare 1 . However, modern domesticated breeds do not descend from the earliest domestic horse lineage associated with archaeological evidence of bridling, milking and corralling 2–4 at Botai, Central Asia around 3500 bc 3 . Other longstanding candidate regions for horse domestication, such as Iberia 5 and Anatolia 6 , have also recently been challenged. Thus, the genetic,…

    Open Access•Tatiana Kuznetsova•ARTICLE•Nizhnevolzhskiy Arheologicheskiy…•2020

The article continues the discussion about the object, which was discovered in the Oguz kurgan and is referred to as the sauromatian “mirror” in the literature. A round disk (with a flat side handle) shows a corrugation on its two sides. The purpose of such a thing that does not have a reflective surface is difficult to determine. However, it cannot be called a “mirror” because of the corrugation, so the function of the object has not yet been de…

  • On the Time and Context of the Earliest Bronze Mirrors in the Northern Pontic Region

    Open Access•Tatiana Kuznetsova•ARTICLE•Archaeology Ethnology and…•2018•References: 6

Attempts to push the Archaic Scythian culture back in time have led to a disagreement between archaeological and written sources relevant to the appearance of Scythians in the region north of the Black Sea. In the recent two decades, this event was moved from the late 7th century BC, as the documents suggest, to the mid-7th century BC. In this study, one of the chronological markers motivating this date is subjected to a critical revision. Based …
