  • Industrially produced trans fat and saturated fat content of food products in Jamaica

Open Access•Rasheed Perry, Fitzroy J Henry et al.•ARTICLE•Revista Panamericana de Salud…•2023

Objective. To estimate industrially produced trans and saturated fatty acid levels in foods within the Jamaican food system. Methods. A total of 308 commonly consumed foods were selected for analysis based on their potential to contain trans fatty acids. Samples were collected from supermarkets, convenience stores, and fast-food restaurants. Official methods of gas chromatography for the analysis of fats were used. The results were expressed as g…

  • Comparative cost of diets for low-income families in the Caribbean

Open Access•Fitzroy J Henry, Beverly Lawrence et al.•ARTICLE•Revista Panamericana de Salud…•2022

Objective. To assess the ability of low-income families to obtain a standard basket of healthy foods before and during the COVID-19 pandemic. Methods. The costs of 191 food items were averaged from supermarkets, municipal markets, wholesalers, and community food outlets in high- and low-income areas in three Caribbean countries. The analysis compared foods not only by selecting high- and low-ranked commodities but by the proportions of those food…

  • Improving household nutrition security and public health in the Caricom, 2018–2022

Open Access•Waneisha Jones, Madhuvanti M Murphy et al.•ARTICLE•Revista Panamericana de Salud…•2022

The Caribbean is experiencing a worsening epidemic of obesity and noncommunicable diseases (NCDs) and it has the worst rates of premature mortality from cardiovascular diseases in the region of the Americas. Creating enabling environments to improve dietary diversity would help reduce obesity and diet-related NCDs. The Improving Household Nutrition Security and Public Health in the CARICOM project aimed to increase dietary diversity in the Caribb…

To determine changes to income and livelihood, food consumption, and hunger due to coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) in three Small Island Developing States (SIDS) in the Caribbean: Jamaica, St Kitts and Nevis, and St Vincent and the Grenadines. Methods. This was a cross-sectional study conducted in July 2020. Participants were selected using telephone directories and lists of mobile numbers. Data were collected through face-to-face…

  • Child survival

Open Access•FITZROY HENRY, Fitzroy J Henry et al.•ARTICLE•Health Policy and Planning•1990

This paper examines recent studies which focus on the effectiveness of primary health care activities and concludes that in Bangladesh the potential for substantially improving child survival and growth is severely curtailed by unbalanced strategies. More specifically the paper argues: (1) that focusing interventions on at-risk children at about 6 months of age is more efficient and less costly in preventing malnutrition than monthly monitoring o…

  • Targeting nutritional interventions

Open Access•FITZROY HENRY, Fitzroy J Henry et al.•ARTICLE•Health Policy and Planning•1989•Cited by: 1

To test whether regular monitoring of weight is an efficient way to detect the development of malnutrition, two cohorts of children in Bangladesh and the Caribbean were followed prospectively for 18 months. Results showed that, after 1 year of age, body weight was more closely correlated with weight at 6 months of age than with weight changes in the previous three months. Moreover, weight at 6 months was significantly more closely correlated with…

  • Failure of a supplementary feeding programme to improve the health of young children

Fitzroy J Henry, Edward S Cooper•ARTICLE•Ecology of Food and Nutrition•1986

Each year the world devotes over $300 million to supplementary feeding projects, yet there are few truly empirical studies on the impact of particular schemes. This report presents results of a longitudinal study of a three‐year clinic‐based project in the West Indies. The evaluation showed that mean birth weights of babies of supplemented and unsupplemented mothers were 3.18 ± 0.56 and 3.19 ± 0.52 kg., respectively; the proportion of infants off…
