Profiling infant feeding patterns in Cebu, Philippines
Using biomonthly data, we developed individual longitudinal feeding profiles for 2,635 infants in Cebu, Philippines, to examine diets during the first year of life. Cluster analysis differentiated infants’ full dietary intakes into predominant feeding patterns based on intakes categorized into 19 food groupings. Nine food groupings distinguished the patterns, which were further simplified in order to create a small number of cross‐sectional patte…
Infant feeding in the Philippines
Lack of detailed infant dietary data, nutrient data bases and food pattern methodologies to describe complexities of the total diet has resulted in inadequate information on infant‐feeding patterns in low‐income countries. Customarily, infant diets have been reported in relation to nutrients or types of foods consumed (for example, fed breast milk or breast‐milk substitutes). This paper uses cluster analysis to differentiate feeding patterns for …
Dietary intervention and growth of infants and toddlers in a Philippine rural community
A longitudinal, pretest‐posttest design using purposive sampling was employed to determine the effect of dietary intervention without environmental modifications on the nutritional status of 48 normal or mildly malnourished infants and toddlers in a rural Philippine community. The 24 experimental subjects were provided daily with food supplements so that their total diet met recommended dietary allowances. Data on physical growth, clinical signs …
Mental Development after Dietary Intervention
In an earlier study it was found that the nutritional status of young, rural Philippine children improved after their diets were supplemented for one year, while the status of nonsupplemented children deteriorated. The current study is concerned with the effects of nutrition on the mental development of those children. Following a year of supplementation (experimental group) and monthly checkups (experimental and control groups), 40 children, 24 …
