Silent losses: Predictors of anaemia and micronutrient deficiencies and their associations with menstrual bleeding in Lebanon – findings from a national cross-sectional study
BACKGROUND: Significant physiological changes occur in adolescence, including the onset of menarche in girls. However, the extent to which menstrual bleeding contributes to anaemia and micronutrient deficiencies remains unclear. This study assesses the prevalence of anaemia and micronutrient deficiencies and examines their association with menarcheal status, menstrual bleeding severity and other factors among adolescent girls in Lebanon. METHODS:…
The impact of poverty on child malnutrition and health in Lebanon: The need for multisectoral interventions
Our findings underscore the profound impact of poverty on child malnutrition and infections. To effectively and sustainably address these challenges, a holistic, multisectoral approach is needed, combining targeted nutritional programs, social protection programs, WASH initiatives and educational interventions to break the cycle of poverty and malnutrition
Breakfast consumption among Saudi primary-school children relative to sex and socio-demographic factors
The proportion of school children who ate daily breakfast at home was low, which may have implications for children's school performance. Effort is needed to promote daily breakfast consumption among Saudi school children and to introduce appropriate interventions aimed at promoting daily breakfast consumption among Saudi children
Metabolic syndrome among adolescents in Dubai, United Arab Emirates, is attributable to the high prevalence of low HDL levels: A cross-sectional study
This study indicates the importance of carrying out further investigations about the constituents of HDL and their atherogenic effects. Additionally, these results strongly recommend setting a consensus for HDL measurement, since small variations in methodologies may lead to substantial deviations in results
Established and Suspected Biomarkers of Cardiovascular Disease (CVD) Risk in Pre-Menopausal Lebanese Women
Cardiovascular disease (CVD) is known to be caused by both environmental and non-environmental factors and the contribution of these factors seems to vary among different populations. Major nutritional biomarkers of CVD in 290 Lebanese pre-menopausal women were assessed. Diabetes, folate, and vitamin B12 deficiencies were rare (below 0.5%) among the subjects. Abnormalities in lipid profile were more common, in which 16.7% of subjects had low HDL-…
