The Paradox of Modernity
After the industrialization and globalization conducted by European countries in recent centuries, the European model of capitalism began to prevail around the globe, marking a transition widely considered as the onset of the modern era. With the spread of globalization, numerous countries and their populations began to embrace what was termed “modernity” through various avenues, primarily through revolution or reform. People were influenced by t…
A study on the effect of aqueous extract of Lobelia chinensis on colon precancerous lesions in rats
This paper studies the effects of Lobelia chinensis on colon precancerous lesions and on colonic epithelial proliferation and apoptosis in DMH-induced rats. After two weeks of feeding, 50 Wistar rats were randomly divided into five groups, namely the normal group, model group, Lobelia chinensis low-dose group, medium-dose group and high-dose group. Lobelia chinensis was made into ACF model, and administered to experimental groups for 10 consecuti…
Meena Alexander and American Identity
The need to be born again, a fierce need to reinvent the self, is what drew me to America. For me that is the promise of this country, a promise, crossed with blood. (Alexander, Poetics of Dislocation 134) In the criticism, prose, poetry, and interviews from 1983–2009 that constitute Meena Alexander’s book Poetics of Dislocation (2009), the author revisits a concern that permeates her entire body of work: the struggle to define herself as a poet,…
Do You Feel My Pain? Racial Group Membership Modulates Empathic Neural Responses
The pain matrix including the anterior cingulate cortex (ACC) mediates not only first person pain experience but also empathy for others' pain. It remains unknown, however, whether empathic neural responses of the pain matrix are modulated by racial in-group/out-group relationship. Using functional magnetic resonance imaging we demonstrate that, whereas painful stimulations applied to racial in-group faces induced increased activations in the ACC…
