  • Hunting Small Cave Bear (Ursus rossicus) in the Southern Urals in the Middle Palaeolithic

    M G Zhilin, D O Gimranov et al.•ARTICLE•Stratum plus Archaeology and…•2025

The paper deals with some finds from the Imanai cave in Bashkiria, Southern Ural, which provide evidence of cave bear hunting by the Middle Palaeolithic inhabitants of the region. The excavations conducted in 2015-2016 yielded a small cave bear (Ursus rossicus) cranium with a hole in the right temporal bone. Judging by its morphology and the absence of bone regeneration traces, the hole resulted from a perimortem injury. The only direct radiocarb…

  • About the spatial and chronological relationship between the Mousterian and Micoquian industries of East Europe

    Open Access•Leonid Vishnyatsky•ARTICLE•Camera praehistorica•2023

The geography of the Middle Paleolithic of East Europe (referring to the European part of the former USSR) shows two main peculiarities. The first is a very uneven (patchy) spatial distribution of sites which form dense local accumulations separated by vast empty spaces. The second is the nearly ubiquitous cooccurrence of the Mousterian and Micoquian industries. Both are present in all major accumulations from Transcarpathia in the west to the Vo…

    Open Access•Alexander Otcherednoy, S O Remizov et al.•ARTICLE•Nizhnevolzhskiy Arheologicheskiy…•2020

The Sukhaya Mechёtka site, located on the northern outskirts of Volgograd, has attracted the attention of Paleolithic researchers since its discovery in 1951 by geologists A.I.Koptev and M.N. Grishchenko. The materials of the site - a collection of stone products currently kept at the MAE RAS, and chronostratigraphic information – can be considered as perfect by standards of open Paleolithic complexes. To a large extent, the site acquired such a …

Palaeolithic people could foresee their technological future no more, or even less, than we are able to. They never said, 'The Middle Palaeolithic has gone on quite long enough - now we'd better get on with a transition to the Upper.' So what is one to make of those precocious lithic industries which prefigure key features of later innovations, the industries which 'run ahead' of their own time

However, its relevance to the tasks for which it is usually applied has not been proved and, moreover, is very doubtful. Both typologically and statistically the method is pernicious. It is necessary to elaborate a new approach to the analysing of stone industries on the grounds of realization that there can be and must be m…
