Sequencing Analysis and Radiocarbon Dating of Yarn Fragments from Six Paracas Mantles from Bundle WK12-382
The Necrópolis de Wari Kayan, at the Paracas site in the coastal desert of south–central Peru, is a large archeologically excavated mortuary complex with fine textile preservation, dated approximately to 2000 BP. This study investigates loose yarns associated with textiles from Wari Kayan tomb 12 (bundle 382), collected by the late Dr. Anne Paul in 1985 at what is now the Museo Nacional de Arqueología Antropología e Historia del Perú (MNAAHP). Se…
Development of the Intcal Database
The IntCal family of radiocarbon ( 14 C) calibration curves is based on research spanning more than three decades. The IntCal group have collated the 14 C and calendar age data (mostly derived from primary publications with other types of data and meta-data) and, since 2010, made them available for other sorts of analysis through an open-access database. This has ensured transparency in terms of the data used in the construction of the ratified c…

Radiocarbon Dating Rozhok I, a Middle Paleolithic Open-Air Site in Southern Russia
Samples of bone and teeth from the Middle Paleolithic open-air site of Rozhok I, located on the Gulf of Taganrog, were dated by radiocarbon ( 14 C). We obtained 26 accelerator mass spectrometry (AMS) dates on a large sample of nonhuman bone and teeth recovered by N. D. Praslov during 1961–1962 from 5 of the 6 occupation horizons at Rozhok I. Two rigorous pretreatment methods were applied to the samples: ultra-filtration and XAD resin. The 14 C ag…
Radiocarbon Dates From the Mammal Fauna of Crystal Caverns, El Dorado County, California
Dates from the mammal fauna of Crystal Caverns, El Dorado County, California confirm that it is a Pleistocene deposit from the Last Glacial Maximum. Results indicate it is similar in age to other comparable California caves and has a high degree of time averaging
The origins and spread of domestic horses from the Western Eurasian steppes
Domestication of horses fundamentally transformed long-range mobility and warfare 1 . However, modern domesticated breeds do not descend from the earliest domestic horse lineage associated with archaeological evidence of bridling, milking and corralling 2–4 at Botai, Central Asia around 3500 bc 3 . Other longstanding candidate regions for horse domestication, such as Iberia 5 and Anatolia 6 , have also recently been challenged. Thus, the genetic,…

Contamination of Radiocarbon Analyses of Plant Samples by Fungal Hyphae
Fungal hyphae associated with tree roots extending into the surrounding substrate are suspected to have to contaminated buried plant material with recent carbon in two examples and to have resulted in erroneously young radiocarbon ages. This problem might be overcome by choosing sampling sites far from trees or by analyzing the lignin component of samples, although the latter is presently difficult
Female hunters of the early Americas
Sexual division of labor with females as gatherers and males as hunters is a major empirical regularity of hunter-gatherer ethnography, suggesting an ancestral behavioral pattern. We present an archeological discovery and meta-analysis that challenge the man-the-hunter hypothesis. Excavations at the Andean highland site of Wilamaya Patjxa reveal a 9000-year-old human burial (WMP6) associated with a hunting toolkit of stone projectile points and a…
SHCal20 Southern Hemisphere Calibration, 0–55,000 Years cal BP
Early researchers of radiocarbon levels in Southern Hemisphere tree rings identified a variable North-South hemispheric offset, necessitating construction of a separate radiocarbon calibration curve for the South. We present here SHCal20, a revised calibration curve from 0–55,000 cal BP, based upon SHCal13 and fortified by the addition of 14 new tree-ring data sets in the 2140–0, 3520–3453, 3608–3590 and 13,140–11,375 cal BP time intervals. We de…
Single-Year German oak and Californian Bristlecone Pine 14 C Data at the Beginning of the Hallstatt Plateau from 856 BC to 626 BC
As part of the ongoing effort to improve the Northern Hemisphere radiocarbon ( 14 C) calibration curve, this study investigates the period of 856 BC to 626 BC (2805–2575 yr BP) with a total of 403 single-year 14 C measurements. In this age range, IntCal13 was constructed largely from German and Irish oak as well as Californian bristlecone pine 14 C dates, with most samples measured with a 10-yr resolution. The new data presented here is the first…

This research investigates two factors influencing the ability of tree-ring data to provide accurate 14 C calibration information: the fitness and rigor of the statistical model used to combine the data into a curve; and the accuracy, precision and reproducibility of the component 14 C data sets. It presents a new Bayesian spline method for calibration curve construction and tests it on extant and new Southern Hemisphere (SH) data sets (also exam…

Marine Radiocarbon Reservoir Age Along the Chilean Continental Margin
We present 37 new radiocarbon ( 14 C) measurements from mollusk shells fragments sampled along the Chilean continental margin and stored in museum collections with known calendar age. These measurements were used to estimate the modern pre-bomb regional marine 14 C age deviations from the global ocean reservoir (∆R). Together with previously published data, we calculated regional mean ∆R values for five oceanographic macro regions along the coast…

Relationship between solar activity and Δ 14 C peaks in AD 775, AD 994, and 660 BC
Since the AD 775 and AD 994 Δ 14 C peak (henceforth M12) was first measured by Miyake et al. (2012, 2013), several possible production mechanisms for these spike have been suggested, but the work of Mekhaldi et al. (2015) shows that a very soft energy spectrum was involved, implying that a strong solar energetic particle (SEP) event (or series of events) was responsible. Here we present Δ 14 C values from AD 721–820 Sequoiadendron giganteum annua…
The Earliest Shell Fishhooks From the Americas Reveal Fishing Technology of Pleistocene Maritime Foragers
While the North American archaeological record signals the presence of early humans along the northeastern Pacific coast by the Late Pleistocene, we know little about the technological systems employed by these coastally oriented colonizing groups. We here report the discovery of the earliest unequivocal evidence for the use and manufacture of shell fishhooks in the western hemisphere. Four single-piece shell fishhooks dating to the terminal Plei…
Tar Trap
We radiocarbon dated the domestic dog found associated with La Brea Woman at the Rancho La Brea tar pits (Los Angeles, CA) to determine the validity of this human–dog connection. The domestic dog yielded a radiocarbon age of 3125 ± 25 14C yr BP (3250–3400 cal yr BP) and La Brea Woman had a re-dated age of 9080 ± 15 14C yr BP (10,220–10,250 cal yr BP). This ∼7000-year offset dispels the hypothesis this was an intentional and ceremonial human–dog b…
Decadally Resolved Lateglacial Radiocarbon Evidence from New Zealand Kauri
The Last Glacial–Interglacial Transition (LGIT; 15,000–11,000 cal BP) was characterized by complex spatiotemporal patterns of climate change, with numerous studies requiring accurate chronological control to decipher leads from lags in global paleoclimatic, paleoenvironmental, and archaeological records. However, close scrutiny of the few available tree-ring chronologies and radiocarbon-dated sequences composing the IntCal13 14 C calibration curv…

New 14C dates for Spring Creek and Mowbray Swamp megafauna
Bones from extinct Australian marsupials found at Spring Creek, Victoria, and in the Mowbray Swamp, Tasmania, have yielded scattered and anomalously young radiocarbon ages measured on collagen, gelatin or ultrafiltered gelatin. We resampled previously dated material from those two sites and from Mt Cripps, Tasmania, as well as a control sample from Zaglik, Russia, to compare chronologies based on XAD‐2 purified total amino acid fractions and coll…
IntCal09 and Marine09 Radiocarbon Age Calibration Curves, 0-50,000 Years cal BP
The IntCal04 and Marine04 radiocarbon calibration curves have been updated from 12 cal kBP (cal kBP is here defined as thousands of calibrated years before AD 1950), and extended to 50 cal kBP, utilizing newly available data sets that meet the IntCal Working Group criteria for pristine corals and other carbonates and for quantification of uncertainty in both the 14 C and calendar timescales as established in 2002. No change was made to the curves…

Volcanism, Ecology and Culture
The Tierra Blanca Joven (TBJ) eruption of the Ilopango caldera in central El Salvador was one of the largest Holocene volcanic events in Central America, and its ecological and cultural impacts were felt throughout El Salvador and adjoining areas of Guatemala and Honduras. Early radiocarbon measurements established a ca. A. D. 260 ± 114 calendar date for the eruption. However, a reevaluation of the original 14C dates, in addition to new AMS 14C a…

Radiocarbon dates for pictographs in Ignatievskaya Cave, Russia
Samples from three charcoal pictographs at Ignatievskaya Cave, in the southern Ural Mountains of Russia, have been radiocarbon dated. An advanced antiquity was expected, with some paintings thought to be more than 10,000 years old, as suggested by the imagery. One charcoal painting, for example, resembles a mammoth. The radiocarbon date of that motif, however, dates only to 7370±50 BP. If that motif actually represents a live mammoth, it places m…

Radiocarbon Dates for Beeswax Figures in the Prehistoric Rock Art of Northern Australia
Accelerator mass spectrometry radiocarbon ages have been taken for a test suite of small samples of material removed from some of the ‘beeswax’art figures found in rock shelters in northern Australia. The results indicate that we can reliably date this unique form of rock art with no noticeable damage. We had not expected to find figures of any great antiquity, and so we were surprised to find that the ages obtained spanned the time period from t…

Mass Spectrometric Radiocarbon Dates from Three Rock Paintings of Known Age
Radiocarbon age determinations are presented on three hieroglyphic texts from Naj Tunich cave in Guatemala containing Maya calendar dates. The ages obtained are on average 110-140 years older than the calendar dates. Several possible reasons are discussed for this discrepancy: one that is applicable to all radiocarbon dates on charcoal, one that applies to rock paintings, and one that is specific for the tropics. Possible problems with the ages a…
Dating Pictographs with Radiocarbon
We report here progress on our technique for 14 C dating pictographs. We use low-temperature oxygen plasmas coupled with high-vacuum techniques to selectively remove carbon-containing material in the paints without contamination from rock substrates or accretions. We dated >16 pictograph samples that generally agree with ages expected on the basis of archaeological inference. We have shown that carbonate and calcium oxalate decomposition does not…

Potential Pitfalls of Pollen Dating
Pollen extracted from ocean and wetland sediments cored from the eastern Canadian Margin, James Bay region, and Atlantic provinces of Canada have been radiocarbon dated and results are reported here. Pollen dates from ocean sediments were compared with marine carbonate (mollusk shells or foraminifera) dates from the same core levels, dates for which validity was assessed via correlations with other cores, and for which reworking has been excluded…
Resolving an Anomolous Radiocarbon Determination on Mastodon Bone from Monte Verde, Chile
Previous 14C determinations obtained on two segments of a single mastodon bone recovered from Monte Verde, Chile, were highly discordant, differing by more than 5,000 years. Because of the significance of this site in discussions concerning the earliest peopling of the Western Hemisphere, additional 14C and new δ13C values have been obtained on organic fractions isolated from both segments. The constituent amino acid profiles indicate that both b…

Radiocarbon Analyses of Modern Organics at Monte Verde, Chile
Radiocarbon measurements have been obtained on contemporary plant samples collected at the site of Monte Verde, Chile, to examine the possibility that a locall4C reservoir effect impinges on the accuracy of thel4C values obtained on previously recovered archaeological samples. Thel4C activity of the modern plants do not reveal any offset from expected contemporaryl4C values and thus provide no support for a major postulated reservoir effect at le…

Holocene Marine Reservoir Time Series ΔR Values from Cedros Island, Baja California
ΔR values have been calculated based on offsets in radiocarbon values exhibited in a series of stratigraphically paired charcoal and marine shell values, ranging from about 300 to 10,000 BP, excavated from archaeological sites on Cedros Island, Baja California, Mexico. Based on this data, there appears to be the equivalent of about an 800-yr range in inferred ΔR values (-400 to 400 yr) exhibited in Holocene-age marine shells from this portion of …
Radiocarbon Dating and Dietary Stable Isotope Analysis of Kwaday Dän Ts'inchí
We report here on the results of AMS dating and isotopic analysis of the frozen human remains named Kwaday Dän Ts'inchí and associated materials recovered from a glacier located in Northwest British Columbia, Canada in 1999. The isotopic analysis of bone collagen (bulk and single amino acids) from the individual indicates a strongly marine diet, which was unexpected given the location of this find, more than 100 km inland eroding out of a high el…
Radiocarbon Dating of Pollen by Accelerator Mass Spectrometry
Radiocarbon dating of bulk sediments has been the standard method for establishing chronologies in the studies of lake sediment cores which have contributed significantly to our knowledge of late Quaternary paleo-environments. These bulk sediment dates are presumed to be direct ageindicators for the speciments (e.g., pollen or macrofossils) which are actually being studied. However, several recent studies have reinforced long-standing apprehensio…
Younger Dryas Climatic Reversal in Northeastern USA? AMS Ages for an Old Problem
Late-glacial macrofossils from a 10-m core from Alpine Swamp, New Jersey, were radiocarbon dated using accelerator mass spectrometry (AMS). The arrival of the first trees to the area following deglaciation is indicated by maximum percentages of spruce pollen and a date of 12,290 ± 440 yr B.P. on a single spruce needle. Subsequent spread of deciduous hardwoods was followed by the expansion of boreal taxa, including spruce ( Picea ), fir ( Abies ),…

Vermilion Lakes Site
The Vermilion Lakes site in Banff National Park, Alberta, has yielded cultural remains suggesting a possible sheep-hunting focus during the Paleoindian period and providing evidence for windbreaks or shelters dating as early as 10,300 B.P. Debris flows at this site have separated and preserved six or more cultural components dating between the mid-eleventh and mid-tenth millennia before present. Paleoenvironmental evidence suggests that most of t…
Holocene Paleohydrology of the Tropical Andes from Lake Records
Two century-scale time series in northern Bolivia constrain the ages of abrupt changes in the physical, geochemical, and biological characteristics of sediments obtained from lakes that formed during deglaciation from the late Pleistocene glacial maximum. The watersheds of Laguna Viscachani (16°12′S, 68°07′W, 3780 m) and Lago Taypi Chaka Kkota (16°13′S, 68°21′W, 4300 m), located on the eastern and western slopes of the Cordillera Real, respective…

Rock-art image in Fern Cave, Lava Beds National Monument, California
The visual manifestation of the recent Hale-Bopp comet reminds us how telling are those rare objects which suddenly flare in the sky. One can suppose ancient people living by natural light were more compellingly struck by the sight of comets and supernovae, and understandably researchers seek images of them in the shapes of rock-art motifs. An absolute dating contradicts that supposition in respect of a presumed image of the visible supernova of …

Synchronous Radiocarbon and Climate Shifts During the Last Deglaciation
Radiocarbon data from the Cariaco Basin provide calibration of the carbon-14 time scale across the period of deglaciation (15,000 to 10,000 years ago) with resolution available previously only from Holocene tree rings. Reconstructed changes in atmospheric carbon-14 are larger than previously thought, with the largest change occurring simultaneously with the sudden climatic cooling of the Younger Dryas event. Carbon-14 and published beryllium-10 d…
Dated Rock Paintings at Red Cliffs, Arizona
This article presents radiocarbon dates for painted motifs at Red Cliffs, west of Sedona in the northeastern corner of Yavapai County, Arizona. All rock painting shields at the Red Cliffs sites have usually been attributed to the Sinagua. Black pigment from one shield motif and an overlying white dot on another motif yielded uncalibrated radiocarbon dates of 1080 and 550 years B.P., respectively. The black pigment sample dates to a time when the …
Late Prehistoric Petroleum Collection in Pennsylvania
Previous reports using archaeological, ethnohistoric, and historic data have proposed that petroleum was extracted by pre-contact aboriginal populations in western Pennsylvania employing wood-lined pits. A suite of AMS-based 14C analyses on total amino acid extracts on nine duplicate samples from a homogenized decadal (10-year) sample of wood taken from a single stake removed from a pit feature at Drake Well Park, Titusville, Pennsylvania, has pe…
