    전곡리유적 지표에서 발견된 주먹도끼는 형태적 특징으로부터 오랜 인류의 소산으로 인식되어 온 아프리카 아슐리안형 주먹도끼에 비견되었다. 아울러 찍개와 달리 동아시아에서의 발견 사례가 드물었던 점이 부각되어 전기 구석기시대의 유물로 예찰되었다. 따라서 이를 뒷받침할 수 있는 절대연대 값을 얻고자 유적의 기저를 이루고 있는 용암대지에 대한 K-Ar 연대측정이 처음 시도되었다. 이후 각 문화층의 생활상을 비롯하여 각 시기의 자연환경 변화 및 유적 형성과정을 이해하고자 지형 및 지질조사, 고생물학적 분석 등 자연과학적 연구를 폭넓게 병행되었다. 특히 퇴적층의 시간 층위를 확립하고자 K-Ar/Ar-Ar 연대측정, FT 연대측정, 화산재 분석, TL/OSL/IRSL/BLSL 연대측정, 고지자기 연대측정, 동위원소측정, AMS-14C 연대측정 등이 다각적으로 시도되었다. 현재까지 40여 년의 발굴조사 및 연구…
