Paving the road ahead
This Forum reflects the stimulating conversations we had as participants in a roundtable at the 2023 Boston meeting of the Association for Asian Studies. The discussion centred on the position of women (as both contributors and subjects) in competing visions of modernity in Southeast Asia. Our overall goals were to explore how women contributed to these visions and the extent to which their hopes were realised. In the process, numerous questions …
A nn M arie L. D avis . Imagining Prostitution in Modern Japan, 1850–1913
Imagining Prostitution in Modern Japan, 1850–1913 is a fascinating study of the way that prostitution was depicted in late nineteenth and early twentieth century Japan. The book begins in the years just before Commodore Perry arrived in Edo Bay and instituted the Ansei Treaties port system through gun boat diplomacy, ending more than two centuries of Japanese isolationism and flooding Japanese ports with foreign men. Under what came to be called …

French Women and the Empire
This is a well-written, thoroughly-researched investigation into the significance of French women to the colonial project in Indochina. Rich in detail, the book fills the conspicuous gap in scholarship about the lives of white women in the colony, a subject that has long been studied in the British empire. Its author, Marie-Paule Ha, contends that the colonial government saw French women as essential to promoting the French colonial mission in In…

Hierarchies of Race and Gender in the French Colonial Empire, 1914-1946
This article looks at French Indochina, metropolitan France, and French West Africa from 1914 through 1946 to illustrate specific ways in which French colonial authority operated across the French empire. We look at how colonized people challenged the complex formal and informal hierarchies of race, class, and gender that French administrators and colonizers sought to impose upon them. We argue that both the French imperial prerogatives and colon…
Shades of Whiteness
During World War I male French citizens in Cochinchina whom the colonial government had drafted to fight in Europe left their families behind in the colony. Through a complicated subsidies process, the government offered financial assistance to families impoverished by the draftee's departure and the concomitant loss of income. Far from being a monolithic category, the colony's poor white applicants, also known as petits-blancs, received varying …
