    Open Access•Aditia Gunawan•ARTICLE•Wacana Journal of the Humanities…•2025

This article examines the linguistic landscape of pre-modern Sunda, drawing on documents from the fourteenth to sixteenth centuries. • Old Sundanese Inscriptions

    Open Access•Aditia Gunawan, Arlo Griffiths•ARTICLE•Archipel•2021•References: 25

Old Sundanese inscriptions had already been studied by the end of the 19th century by the Dutch scholars, and post-Independence Indonesian scholars have continued to make occasional contributions. However, the epigraphic corpus still leaves many problems without a compelling solution, while the available editions are of uneven quality. This article’s objective is to present new editions of fifteen Old Sundanese inscriptions, based on direct readi…

This article will analyse the distribution of the particle ma in Old Sundanese texts. Our observations are as follows: (1) ma not only appears in direct dialogues, but also in narrative texts, both prose …

  • The International Intensive Courses in Old Javanese (2014–2019)

Open Access•Andrea Acri, Arlo Griffiths et al.•ARTICLE•Archipel•2019

Old Javanese is the foremost classical language of Indonesia. Competence in this language provides access to a rich Indianized literary tradition and a wide epigraphic corpus covering the period from 800 to 1500 ce. But it is not regularly taught in any Western university, and no solid conditions for its study exist even in Indonesia. Given this state of affairs, the École française d’Extrême-Orient (EFEO) and the National Library of Indonesia (P…

This article discusses Sundanese textiles in the pre-Islamic period, as they are depicted in Old Sundanese texts. Precolonial sources from the Sundanese speaking region are studied in terms of their connection to textiles (in particular woven textiles), including features to do with the relevant activities, instruments, colours, motifs and the spiritual aspects behind that exclusively female occupation. Because the formulaic aspects of Old Sundan…

This article takes up the question of writing supports, the physical media on which texts were recorded on the island of Java before paper and printing were introduced, with special focus on the western region and the Old Sundanese tradition. In the past, two types of indigenous writing materials prepared from the leaves of palm trees were identified, one known among scholars in the Dutch tradition as ‘nipah’, the other as ‘lontar’. While lontar …
