Women’s lived experiences of the built environment and maternal psychosocial well-being in urban slums and slum rehabilitation colonies
BACKGROUND: Nearly half of India's urban population lives in informal settlements, facing substandard living conditions due to overcrowding, poor infrastructure, and limited access to basic amenities. These conditions critically affect the psychosocial well-being of mothers, yet limited research exists on how the built environment impacts maternal psychosocial health in urban poor settings in India. OBJECTIVE: To explore the influence of housing …
Exploring social dynamics of infectious diseases of poverty in urban India
Poverty-related infectious diseases, such as tuberculosis, malaria, and neglected tropical diseases, disproportionately affect vulnerable populations in urban areas worldwide. Understanding the complex interactions between socioeconomic factors and health-seeking behaviours is crucial for addressing these public health concerns. Unplanned urbanization, poor built-environment characteristics, and social determinants increase susceptibility to heal…
A protocol for estimating health burden posed by early life exposure to ambient fine particulate matter and its heavy metal composition
Background: Pregnant women and children are vulnerable to air pollution-related adverse health effects, especially those residing in low-resource and high-exposure settings like India. However, evidence regarding the effects of early-life exposure to air particulate matter (PM) on childhood growth/developmental trajectory is contradictory; evidence about specific constituents of PM, like heavy metals, is limited. Similarly, there are few Indian c…

Out-of-pocket expenditures for childbirth in the context of the Janani Suraksha Yojana (JSY) cash transfer program to promote facility births
OOPE is prevalent among JSY beneficiaries as well in home deliveries. In JSY, OOPE varies by income quintile: wealthier quintiles pay more OOPE. However the cash incentive is adequate enough to provide a net gain for all quintiles. OOPE was largely due to indirect costs and not direct medical payments. The program seems to be effective in providing financial protection for the most vulnerable groups
