Byzantine Buckles of the “Syracuse” Type From the Burial Ground Near the Village of Luchistoye (Southwestern Crimea)
Introduction. In the 7th century, Byzantine bronze buckles of the “Syracuse” type were especially popular among the Goth-Alan population of the southwestern Crimea. Method. The article presents the results of a comprehensive study of buckles from two crypts in the burial ground near the village of Luchistoye, provides their cultural and chronological attribution, and analyzes the alloy composition and technological features of production. Analysi…
Metal finds from the stone crypt in the northern part of the Pantikapaean necropolis (“Glinishche” district)
The article is focused on the study of the alloy composition and the peculiarities of the manufacturing technique of metal objects uncovered during the excavation in the crypt in the northern part of the Panticapaeum necropolis. Based on the results of research on the details of funeral wreaths with natural science methods, it was established that they were made of gold of a fairly high standard. The use of such an alloy in the Roman period was r…
Tricky technology of making silver seed beads in the Early Bronze Age, NW Caucasus
This study reconstructed the technical chaîne operatoire of silver seed bead production in the Maikop culture on the basis of tracewear analysis and experimental research using silver beads from the Early Bronze Age dolmen (c. 3200–2900 bce ) in kurgan 2 at Tsarskaya (1898). The results demonstrate that such beads were produced as a “garland” lost wax casting, when a garland of beads is formed on a hollow dry stalk (straw) that burns out during t…
Sickles from the Sosnovaya Maza hoard of the Late Bronze Age from the Lower Volga region
“New history” of the “idol” from the mound Chernaya Mogila (10th c.)
Metalworking Techniques on the Eurasian Steppes in the Late Bronze Age
The Late Bronze Age is a period characterized by chariots and riders, spearheads, bows and battle axes. Such are the assemblages of grave goods attributed to the Seima‐Turbino, Timber‐grave, Abashevo, Sintashta, Pokrovsk and other cultures of the Eurasian forest‐steppe and steppe belt. Although hoard deposits are comparatively rare in this context, this category of finds has also provided some extraordinary examples of metalwork. This paper repor…
The Production of Thin‐Walled Jointless Gold Beads from the Maykop Culture Megalithic Tomb of the Early Bronze Age at Tsarskaya in the North Caucasus
This study, the first of this kind, reconstructs the technical chaîne operatoire of thin‐walled jointless gold bead production in the Maykop culture on the basis of trace‐wear analysis, experimental research and comparative analysis, using gold beads from the Early Bronze Age dolmen ( c . 3200–2900 bc ) in kurgan 2 at Tsarskaya (discovered in 1898). The results of the study demonstrate that such beads were produced from a perforated disc‐shaped b…
