Religion, Education and City Politics
This chapter describes ongoing research into the processes by which political activity, at least in part, follows the contour lines of ethno-religious communities in Upton, a large, pseudonymous English city. It presents a project to assess the variable significance of religious collectivities as vehicles of political activity. To give the project a sharper focus, the chapter examines issues of school-level education as the site on which the inte…
Providing multi-agency children’s services in an austere climate: Professional narratives on parenting support in Wales
Family and child-focused policies, including parenting support, have been of continued concern for governments in the United Kingdom (UK) from New Labour to the Conservative-led coalition. This article considers these policy arenas through the narratives of professionals who work with children and parents in a local authority in Wales. Resistance, rights and rituals: Denominational schools and multicultural education
In recent years a substantial number of LEAS have introduced policies concerned with the promotion of cultural diversity and/or the eradication of racial inequality in education. In this article we consider the impact of this trend on the voluntary aided sector of education. Our analysis draws on the findings of our research into the relationship between LEA policy and school practices in ‘Milltown’. Our two surveys revealed a significant dispari…

This paper develops three inter-related themes as a framework for the analysis of the formulation and implementation of equal opportunities policies within local government: namely; corporate policy-making, co-option and consultation. A Political Re-Examination of Seato
It is now three years since the Southcast Asia Treaty Organization (SEATO) was rather hastily established after the French military collapse in Indo-China. What is its present effectiveness, and what are its prospects, as a security organization for Southeast Asia? There has never been any doubt or obscurity about SEATO's over-riding purpose to resist the extension, by whatever means, of communist rule in Southeast Asia. At die Manila Conference …

Reflections on Japan
I LEFT Australia Tokyo in March i946 to represent jointly the United Kingdom, Australia, New Zealand and India on the Allied Council Japan, and held that post until September I947. From April to September I947 I was concurrently Head of the Australian Mission to Japan. I had not been to Japan before, had no specialist knowledge of the country and had a good enough sense of my limitations not to attempt to learn the Japanese language. Hence I writ…

The Communist Problem in East Asia-A Western View
To think clearly about the problems of East Asia, it is desirable to distinguish between the aims of Western policy, the methods available for pursuing them, and the conditions in East Asia to which the methods must be adapted in order to succeed.
