Exploring smallholders’ cultural beliefs and their implication for adaptation to climate change in North-Western Nigeria
This paper examined coping and adaptation strategies employed by smallholder farmers and their efficacy in response to climate change in Zango and Kofa communities in North-Western Nigeria. Three focus group discussions with 51 participants comprising men, women, and the youth, and 15 follow-up interviews were conducted in this study to understand the influence of cultural beliefs on climate change adaptation. Results show that to adapt, farmers …

In this work a former member of the French Resistance, Jacques Adler, examines the diverse Jewish organizations that existed in Paris during the German occupation from 1940 to 1944. Showing how they combated gradual anti-Jewish measures, he presents an important portrait of communal solidarity and communal conflict, of heroes and of those whose courage failed

How Shall the Nations Repent? The Stuttgart Declaration of Guilt, October 1945
The Stuttgart Declaration of Guilt, issued by the leaders of the German Evangelical (i.e. Protestant) churches in October 1945, was a unique document in the recent history of the Christian Churches. The solemn proclamation included the by-now well-known sentences: With great pain do we say: through us endless sufferings have been brought to many peoples and nations. What we have often borne witness to before our congregations, we now declare in t…

Myron C. Taylor's Mission to the Vatican 1940-1950
The mission of Myron C. Taylor, personal representative of Presidents Roosevelt and Truman to Pope Pius XII, remains a strange anomaly in the history of the foreign relations of the United States. Ever since 1867, when an act of Congress terminated diplomatic relations between the republic and the world's oldest diplomatic entity, the United States had been unrepresented at the Vatican City. The short-lived attempt to reconstitute some form of pe…
The Tibetan Community in Exile
FIFTEEN YEARS have now elapsed since the flight of the Dalai Lama from Tibet in March i959. The Tibetan refugees who accompanied him in large numbers into exile in India and its neighbouring states of Nepal, Bhutan and Sikkim have now lived for half a generation in their new surroundings. Their children have been born and educated without contact with their homeland, depending solely on the memories of the older generation for their knowledge of …

The Holocaust and the Historians
The impact of the Holocaust has been interpreted by historians largely according to the present needs of their audiences. Jewish historians, both in Israel and outside, see these events as the culminating tragedy of their people before the rebirth in statehood. German historians are more con cerned with the attempt to overcome their knowledge of guilt and therefore concentrate, not so much on Jewish sufferings, as on Nazi rule. Christian historia…
Vatican Diplomacy Today: The Legacy of Paul VI
The Vatican, Great Britain, and Relations with Germany, 1938–1940
The Vatican in the twentieth century has played a far less considerable role on the world's stage than in previous centuries. Stripped of its temporal possessions, the Vatican no longer exercises that military and political power which Napoleon estimated to be worth an army corps of 20,000 men, but which his latter day successor, Stalin, could sardonically dismiss with the (apocryphal) question: ‘How many divisions has the Pope?’ Nevertheless, th…
The Silence of Pope Pius XII
It Is hardly surprising that the play Der Stellvertreter (The Deputy) by the young German author Rolf Hochhuth should have aroused controversy ever since its first performance in February, 1963, in Berlin. For it aims to depict not merely historical characters in a fictional drama, but historical characters in a historical setting of almost unprecedented significance and consequence. The use of the drama as a vehicle for political attack is nothi…

Europe's Road to Potsdam
The Historiography of the German Church Struggle
T IS a regrettable fact that in almost all the accounts by English-speaking authors of the Nazi era in Germany only slight attention is paid to the affairs of the Churches. So much attention has been paid, and so much discussion focused, on the military and political events of the years of the Nazi tyranny that the internal developments, with the exception of the Resistance movement and the construction of the notorious concentration camps, have …
