  • Sets of Bone Plates with “Plexys” Ornaments from Early Nomad Burials of the 3rd Century BC in the Southern Urals

    K Fedorov•ARTICLE•Stratum plus Archaeology and…•2023

Sets of bone plates covered with braided ornaments (plexys) which were found in Bishungarovo and Zhaiyik-1 Burial Mounds in Southern Sub Urals belong to Greek-type caskets. Similar caskets were often found in Scythian burials of the Northern Black Sea region. But here the “plexys” ornaments are more widely spread than anywhere else in the early nomadic environment — in the decoration of weapons, vessels made of precious metals, on bone combs and …

    Open Access•K Fedorov•ARTICLE•Nizhnevolzhskiy Arheologicheskiy…•2022

The article is devoted to one of the categories of ceramic ware of the early nomads of the Southern Suburals. These are the small vessels with a slightly swollen body and high neck ornamented with vertical or oblique flutes or having no ornament. Finds of charred plant remains inside them, including Datura, indicate that such vessels were used for incense including aromatic smoke, obviously, with narcotic effect. A thick layer of carbon is found …

  • Black Pebbles, White Bones

    K Fedorov•ARTICLE•Stratum plus Archaeology and…•2022

Accumulations of burnt pebbles are often found in burials of the early nomads. Such pebbles are called kumalak- stones in literature suggesting the purpose of fortune-telling or playing. But neither their size nor weight, nor their form is similar to real kumalaks. The key to understanding the purpose of these pebbles is that they are burnt. The article suggests that they are accessories of the “steam bath of the Scythians” for the ritual of the …

  • Pottery vessels of the early Southern Ural nomads with dimple-pearl ornament

    Open Access•K Fedorov•ARTICLE•Vestnik arheologii, antropologii…•2022•References: 1

The article aims at studying vessels of early nomads decorated with dimple-pearl ornament. To achieve this, the following issues need to be addressed: their origins, territorial distribution, chronological framework of the distribution, connection of the ornament with certain types of vessels, and the reasons for the disappearance of vessels with this ornament. A set of methods has been applied to achieve this, including cartographic, compara-tiv…

  • The Triquetras from the Filippovka Kurgans, Southern Urals

    Open Access•K Fedorov•ARTICLE•Archaeology Ethnology and…•2020•Cited by: 1

The triquetra sign is comparatively rare in early nomadic cultures. It occurs mostly in the steppe area east of the southern Urals, specifically on petroglyphs, metal details on horse harness, bronze mirrors, metal plaques, and felted items. This article describes a series of triquetra signs from kurgans 1 and 4 at Filippovka I, representing the culture of the early nomadic elite of the southern Urals. The burials in which they were found have a …

  • Burial Mound 7 of Sara Burial Ground (D.I. Zakharov’s Excavations, 1928)

    Open Access•K Fedorov•ARTICLE•Nizhnevolzhskiy Arheologicheskiy…•2019

The article is devoted to historiographic research of the excavation materials from mound 7 of Sara burial ground. The excavations took place in the Eastern Orenburg area in 1928. The materials of these excavations entered scientific circulation in 1960 and contained serious errors, which greatly distorted the discoveries made there. B.F. Zhelezchikov, archaeologist from Volgograd, was the first to pay attention to this fact in 1997 but he just m…

  • Abandoned, Tied, Flexed

    Open Access•K Fedorov, A I Nechvaloda et al.•ARTICLE•Archaeology Ethnology and…•2018•References: 5

We describe an unusual triple burial in southern Bashkiria, dating to 100–400 AD. Its peculiarity is that the two males had been buried on the step of the entrance pit in unusual postures—prone with their knees pulled to the chins. A woman buried in the undercut lay in a normal (supine) posture. The prone position of the dead is quite rare at Late Sarmatian cemeteries, and flexed burials are exceptional. The anthropological examination revealed t…

  • Hoofed Carnivore” Image Carved on a Bone Spoon from the Sara Burial Ground, Eastern Orenburg Region1

    Open Access•K Fedorov, V K Fedorov•ARTICLE•Archaeology Ethnology and…•2014

A composite image of a “hoofed carnivore,” carved on a horn spoon from an early nomadic burial at Sara, Orenburg Province, is described. It combines the features of an ungulate and a carnivore – an open mouth with large canines and hoofed legs. Two interpretations, none of which is easy to substantiate, are discussed: either the carving represents a fantastic image or it is the artistic rendition of an actual animal – a musk deer. None of these v…
