  • Fortuitous Parallels or Historical Connections? The Prehistoric Indus Valley and Minoan Crete

    Open Access•A S Bhalla•ARTICLE•Indian Historical Review•2025

Ancient societies rarely developed in isolation. There have been contacts between them through maritime trade and human migrations. They went through similar stages of evolution, namely, birth, growth, decline and disappearance or disintegration. Striking similarities and parallels between the Indus Valley and Minoan Crete have been shown to exist. They were discussed in this review by a well-known Greek archaeologist, late Professor Costis Davar…

  • Poverty and inequality among Chinese minorities

    A S Bhalla, Shufang Qiu•CHAPTER•Poverty and Inequality among…•2024

Much has been written on poverty alleviation in developing countries. The bulk of the poverty literature assumes that rapid economic growth will more or less automatically create a real dent in the poverty problem. There are those who believe that high and rapid growth is a necessary but not a sufficient condition for poverty alleviation (Drèze and Sen, 1990). China is a classic example of a high rate of growth for sustained periods. Even though …

  • Poverty and Exclusion in a Global World

    Open Access•A S Bhalla, A Bhalla et al.•BOOK•Poverty and Exclusion in a Global…•2004

This volume looks at the three dimensions of social exclusion: economic, social and political. Exclusion is analyzed as a new approach to such issues as the 'new' poverty, precariousness, long-term unemployment, social polarization and lack of citizenship. The book shows how relational and distributional aspects of poverty are interlinked

    Open Access•A S Bhalla, Ajit Bhalla et al.•ARTICLE•Development and Change•1997•Cited by: 31

This article attempts to analyse the economic, social and political dimensions of social exclusion. After comparing the concept with the conventional notions of poverty and marginalization, we argue that social exclusion overlaps with poverty broadly defined, but goes beyond it by explicitly embracing the relational as well as distributional aspects of poverty. It is shown that the concept has universal validity although it has not gained much at…

  • A disaggregative approach to employment in LDCs

    A S Bhalla•ARTICLE•The Journal of Development Studies•1973

This paper shows that the current aggregative explanations of growth in ‘tertiary’ sector output and employment in the less developed countries (LDCs) are not satisfactory. It is argued that Colin Clark's celebrated hypothesis that the percentage share of tertiary output and employment rises with increases in per capita incomes, has often been misinterpreted in the context of the LDCs' economies. The paper proposes disaggregate employment functio…
