  • Phonological distances between Eurasian lects measured via Phonotacticon 1.0 reveal areal patterns

    Open Access•Ian Joo, Y Y Hsu•ARTICLE•Linguistics•2026

The present study measures the phonological distances between 335 spoken lects of Eurasia using Phonotacticon 1.0, a cross-linguistic database, and explores whether phonologically similar lects form areal patterns within Eurasia. Results indicate that phonological clusters tend to form geographical clusters, which divides Eurasia horizontally into eastern (East/Southeast Asia), central (South/Central/North/West Asia), and western (Europe) regions…

  • Phonotacticon

    Open Access•Ian Joo, Y Y Hsu•ARTICLE•Linguistic Typology•2025

Phonotacticon is a cross-linguistic database that contains syllabic phonotactic information about spoken lects (linguistic varieties), including the possible forms of the onset, nucleus and coda of each lect, as well as the phonemic and tonemic inventories. In this paper, we present Phonotacticon 1.0, which contains the phonotactic profiles of 516 Eurasian lects retrieved from descriptive literature. The later versions of Phonotacticon will exten…

  • Content-Form Interaction in the Acquisition of Temporal Markers by Mandarin-Speaking Children

    Open Access•Tempo Po-Yi Tang, Y Y Hsu et al.•ARTICLE•SAGE Open•2024

Aspect markers (AMs), temporal adverbs (TAs) and temporal nouns (TNs) are used by young Mandarin-speaking children to express time. However, the factors that affect the relative acquisition trajectories of these categories remains unclear. Accordingly, this study adopts Weist’s time-concept model to examine the patterns of acquisition between and within the above three categories of temporal markers in the Mandarin system of time. Specifically, t…

  • Legalising Same-Sex Marriage in Taiwan

    Y Y Hsu, Tzu-Chiao Su•ARTICLE•European Journal of East Asian…•2023•References: 2

This article examines the case of Taiwan’s anti-same-sex marriage referendum of 2018. This case shows that a referendum can severely affect the model of constitutional sovereignty which has guided Taiwan since its democratisation. The fact that populists were able to use the referendum as a tool to delegitimise the state organs, we argue, throws light on the relationship between populism and direct democracy

  • Modal raising and focus marking in Chinese

    Open Access•Y Y Hsu•ARTICLE•Journal of Linguistics•2023•References: 9

This paper presents several new empirical observations regarding some interpretive effects and structural restrictions of modals that occur in sentence-initial positions in Chinese. It provides a new analysis of sentence-initial modal sentences in terms of the overt head-movement of a modal to the sentence periphery to value strong focus features and to focus-mark either the proposition or the subject of a sentence. This new proposal helps explai…

  • Iconic bias in Italian spatial demonstratives

    Open Access•Ian Joo, Y Y Hsu et al.•ARTICLE•Australian Journal of Linguistics•2022

An iconic pattern across spoken languages is that words for ‘this’ and ‘here’ tend to have high front vowels, whereas words for ‘that’ and ‘there’ tend to have low and/or back vowels. In Italian, there are two synonymous Italian words for ‘here’, namely qui and qua, and two synonymous words for ‘there’, lì and là. Qui ‘here’ and là ‘there’ are iconic because qui has the high front vowel /i/ and là has the low vowel /a/, whereas qua ‘here’ and lì …

  • Exploring the impact of word order asymmetry on cognitive load during Chinese–English sight translation

Open Access•Xingcheng Ma, Dechao Li et al.•ARTICLE•Target International Journal of…•2021

This paper explores the impact of word order asymmetry between source language and target language on cognitive load during Chinese–English sight translation. Twenty-five MA students of translation from a Hong Kong university were asked to sight translate sentences with different degrees of between-language structural asymmetry from Chinese into English, in both single-sentence and discourse context conditions. Their eye movements were recorded t…
