Reading and Writing the Lakota Language: Lakota Iyapi uh Wowapi nahah Yawapi
Based on extensive research and pedagogy on the Rosebud Reservation, this elementary grammar of Lakota, one of the three languages spoken by the Sioux nation, is the first written by a native Lakota speaker. It presents the Sicangu dialect using an orthography developed by Lakota in 1982 and which is now supplanting older systems provided by linguists and missionaries. Against li lowering in Bulgarian
Lowering in overt syntax is known to be problematic as it involves movement into a non c-commanding position; i.e., it violates the ECP by precluding the trace left by movement from being properly governed. Putative examples of overt syntactic lowering (e.g., English Infl onto main verbs) have recently received an alternative explanation in terms of non-overt, LF-movement of V0 to I0 (Chomsky, 1993). Syntax and prosody: Li questions in Macedonian and Bulgarian
The distribution of the yes/no-interrogative clitic li in Macedonian and Bulgarian reveals a complex interaction of syntax with prosodic factois. The underlying syntactic uniformity of li questions in the two languages is obscured by a series of prosodic phenomena affecting one language or the other.
