  • Domain properties and the representation of terminological relations

    Open Access•Pius Ten Hacken•ARTICLE•Terminology International Journal…•2026

Frame-Based Terminology (FBT) proposes the use of frames as a model for the representation of terminological relations. Frames provide an alternative to the hierarchical concept systems of Wüster’s Allgemeine Terminologielehre (ATL; ‘General Theory of Terminology’). For some domains, frames are more useful than for others. In order to find out which properties of a domain determine this, three domains are compared. In the domain of rodents, a hie…

  • The Meaning of Nominalisation

    Open Access•Pius Ten Hacken•ARTICLE•Roczniki Humanistyczne•2023

Nominalisation is a morphological process producing a noun on the basis of an input that may belong to various categories. As noun is a syntactic category, whether something is a noun can only be decided on the basis of syntactic evidence, not on the basis of its meaning or morphological behaviour. As a theoretical framework, I use Jackendoff’s Parallel Architecture (PA) as a basis, but I argue for a separate word formation component. The central…

  • The Nature of Compounding

    Open Access•Pius Ten Hacken•ARTICLE•Cadernos de Linguística e Teoria…•2021•Cited by: 1

This paper addresses the question of the definition of compounding from a terminological perspective. In terminology, concepts are defined by a selection of properties shared by prototypical cases. For scientific terminology, the selection is validated by the strength of the theories that can use the definition. It is shown that morphophonological criteria often adduced in the delimitation of compounding are not adequate in a universal definition…

  • Norms, New Words, and Empirical Reality

    Open Access•Pius Ten Hacken•ARTICLE•International Journal of…•2020•References: 1

The central question of this paper is how the inclusion of new words in dictionaries can be related to the empirical reality and norms of language. Because dictionaries are generally dictionaries of a language, the starting point is how this notion of named language is framed. The traditional view of a language as a system is contrasted with the corpus-based view of a language as realized in use and with the Chomskyan view based on language as a …

  • Dictionaries, Neologisms, and Linguistic Purism

Open Access•Pius Ten Hacken, Maria Koliopoulou et al.•ARTICLE•International Journal of…•2020•Cited by: 2

A discrepancy between the perceptions of the dictionary as gatekeepers and the dictionary as a description of the language can be observed among the general public and lexicographers. This discrepancy is particularly obvious when we consider the inclusion of neologisms. Linguistic purism is generally seen by its advocates as an effort to protect a language. It is particularly relevant when we consider borrowings. These considerations serve as a b…

  • The Semantics of Compounding

    Open Access•Pius Ten Hacken•EDITOR•BOOK•Semantics of Compounding•2016

The question of how to determine the meaning of compounds was prominent in early generative morphology, but lost importance after the late 1970s. In the past decade, it has been revived by the emergence of a number of frameworks that are better suited to studying this question than earlier ones. In this book, three frameworks for studying the semantics of compounding are presented by their initiators: Jackendoff's Parallel Architecture, Lieber's …

  • Word Formation in an Electronic Learners' Dictionary

    Pius Ten Hacken•ARTICLE•International Journal of…•2006•Cited by: 1

New words are formed when new concepts need to be named. Word formation is one of the major mechanisms for the expansion of the vocabulary. In second language acquisition, word formation is important for the decoding of words the learner does not know, for the production of regular new words when the learner has not acquired the standard word, and for the creation of a tighter network structure in the mental lexicon, which facilitates vocabulary …
