Phonetic Parameters and Perceptual Judgments of Accent in English by American and Japanese Listeners
Timothy J. Riney, Naoyuki Takagi, Kumiko Inutsuka, Phonetic Parameters and Perceptual Judgments of Accent in English by American and Japanese Listeners, TESOL Quarterly, Vol. 39, No. 3 (Sep., 2005), pp. 441-466
Segmentals and Global Foreign Accent
This article investigates the relationship between global foreign accent and a more discrete feature of pronunciation-the substitution of the Japanese flap ([r]) for English liquids (/J/ and /1/). The percentages of Japanese flap substitutions by 11 Japanese students during their first and fourth years of college were calculated for target /J/ versus /1/, in reading versus spontaneous tasks, and for word-initial singleton (#_V) versus word-initia…
Global Foreign Accent and Voice Onset Time Among Japanese EFL Speakers
This study follows R. C. Major (1987) and J. E. Flege and W. Eefting (1987a) in its investigation of the correlation between global foreign accent (GFA) and voice onset time (VOT). VOT values for /p/, /t/, and /k/ were measured at 2 times, separated by an interval of 42 months, produced by 11 Japanese speakers of English as a foreign language; 5 age-matched native speakers of English served as the control group. The GFA scores of the same 16 spea…
Toward more homogeneous bilingualisms
Modern, multilingual Singapore is undergoing language shifts that may foreshadow what occurs in some other areas of the world in the twenty-first century. The shifts affect the status, functions, and corpus of Singapore's languages, the types of literacy and bilingualism that Singaporeans are competent in, and the cultural identities of Singaporeans. To date, much of the interpretation of the 'success' of the language policies of the government o…
Pre-colonial Systems of Writing and Post-colonial Languages of Publication
Previous accounts of 'europhone' status (anglophone, francophone, etc.) have inadequately addressed spoken-written differences as well as different post-colonial developments taken by Southeast Asia, South Asia, North Africa and East Africa vis-a-vis those of West Africa, Central Africa, and Southern Africa. This paper investigates to what extent the presence or absence of precolonial use of systems of writing may be related to these differences.…
