  • Southeast Asia

    Michael Yahuda•CHAPTER•International Politics of the…•2019

The Chinese were beginning to use their growing economic advantage for political ends by trying explicitly to reduce Japanese influence and to cast doubt on American alliances. Chinese officials became increasingly intolerant of the expression of opposing views by their Southeast Asian colleagues. As a result of America’s relative decline in the region, the countries of Southeast Asia became more vulnerable to pressure from China. The Southeast A…

  • Democratization and the evolution of Taiwan

    Michael Yahuda•CHAPTER•International Politics of the…•2019

Taiwan has survived and prospered after experiencing two major threats to its existence. The first was in 1950, when Truman interposed the American Seventh Fleet between the Chinese mainland and Taiwan on the outbreak of the Korean War to prevent a Chinese military takeover of the island. The second was in the 1970s, when the Nixon/Kissinger rapprochement with China threatened to be consummated by the American willingness to turn a blind eye to w…

  • The United States and the post–Cold War transformation

    Michael Yahuda•CHAPTER•International Politics of the…•2019

American leaders have had to address two major issues in their approaches to the Asia-Pacific, or the Indo-Pacific, region. The first derives from the global question of what kind of world order should America seek to establish in the new post-Cold War (PCW) era and by what means. The second, is how to balance relations with China with those towards Japan and the rest of East Asia. Many of the American problems with Japan acquired greater salienc…

  • DPRK and ROK

    Michael Yahuda•CHAPTER•International Politics of the…•2019

The Democratic People’s Republic of Korea (DPRK) has been proliferating Weapons of Mass Destruction to various regimes in the Middle East and Africa and possibly to non-state actors too. The hostility between the United States and North Korea goes back to the Korean War and the extension of the Cold War system to East Asia. T The accession of Gorbachev brought about major geopolitical changes in East Asia, as well as in the Atlantic region. he DP…

  • The impact of the Cold War on the Asia-Pacific

    Michael Yahuda•CHAPTER•International Politics of the…•2019

This chapter highlights the main characteristics of the Cold War as they developed differently in the Asia-Pacific region in the context of the Korean War as compared to Europe. The bipolar system was more complicated in the Asia-Pacific than in Europe. The chapter shows that less was at stake for the two superpowers, the United States and the Soviet Union, in this region than in Europe, which may explain why the two major wars of the Cold War we…

  • Conclusion

    Michael Yahuda•CHAPTER•International Politics of the…•2019

This chapter considers the three scenarios that are: Donald Trump’s state-centric international series of bilateral arrangements; Xi Jinping’s China-centric series of connectivities spanning the world; and the restoration the liberal economic international system, modeled on the Trans-Pacific Partnership. It suggests that the development over the next decade or so will be a hybrid system of ad-hoc arrangements of a semi-liberal kind, designed to …

  • China

    Michael Yahuda•CHAPTER•International Politics of the…•2019

From the perspectives of China’s communist leaders, the shootings of unarmed civilian protestors by the People’s Liberation Army on June 4, 1989, in and around Tiananmen Square, brought to an end the prospects for political reform in China. Despite the immediate anxieties of its leaders, from a strategic point of view, China benefited enormously from the end of the Cold War. China was able to concentrate primarily upon economic development withou…

  • Japan

    Michael Yahuda•CHAPTER•International Politics of the…•2019

Japan thrived during the Cold War period, when under the military security and favorable economic policies provided by the United States, Japan achieved what was called an ‘economic miracle,’ which by the 1980s enabled it to challenge American postwar dominance of the international economy. Japan’s decline was nevertheless a relative one. The alliance of the US and Japan was not without its tensions during the Cold War despite their sharing a com…

  • From unipolarity to uncertainty

    Michael Yahuda•CHAPTER•International Politics of the…•2019

The Indo-Pacific shares many of the developments that have characterized the ending of the liberal international order in the West. Despite having greatly enlarged China’s sphere of maritime influence, its leaders have refrained from adopting the new geopolitical concept of the Indo-Pacific in the belief that it was a cover for an anti-China strategy. The 2010s may be regarded as the period of American nemesis, the ascent of China as a global pow…

Michael Yahuda, Michael B Yahuda•BOOK•Sino-Japanese Relations after the…•2013

Since the end of the Cold War China and Japan have faced each other as powers of relatively equal strength for the first time in their long history. This textbook will explore in detail the ways in which politics has shaped the thinking …

  • China's New Assertiveness in the South China Sea

    Michael Yahuda•ARTICLE•Journal of Contemporary China•2013•Cited by: 40

China's new assertiveness in the South China Sea has arisen from the growth of its military power, its ‘triumphalism’ in the wake of the Western financial crisis and its heightened nationalism. The other littoral states of the South China Sea have been troubled by the opacity of Chinese politics and of the process of military decision-making amid a proliferation of apparently separately controlled maritime forces. The more active role being playe…

  • Sixty Years of the PRC

    Open Access•Michael Yahuda•ARTICLE•China Report•2010

Anniversaries are occasions for celebration and for taking stock of past problems as well as successes as a basis for looking ahead. But it is important to acknowledge first the enormity of the achievements of the People’s Republic. The sixtieth anniversary has been marked in Beijing by a display of China’s military strength and its wealth. The “sick man” of Asia of a century ago has been transformed into one of the world’s economic power-houses.…

  • China's Foreign Policy Comes of Age

    Michael Yahuda•ARTICLE•The International Spectator•2007

Although China has acquired new weight in world affairs, its foreign policy is driven primarily by domestic considerations. This is true of China's approach to international norms, where it largely resists the case for humanitarian intervention as accepted by most of the international community. The Chinese government still adheres to the doctrine of non-interference, albeit with some flexibility, when its prestige as a responsible great power ma…

  • Chinese dilemmas in thinking about regional security architecture

    Michael Yahuda•ARTICLE•The Pacific Review•2003•Cited by: 4•References: 2

From about the middle of the 1990s China's leaders began to articulate a new concept of security that they called ‘cooperative security’, which was seen as more appropriate to the post-Cold War era than the more traditional military alliance systems. It sought to promote mutual trust and consultation as a means of addressing security problems between states that were neither adversaries nor friends. The new approach was better suited to a China t…

  • The changing faces of Chinese nationalism

    Michael Yahuda•CHAPTER•Asian Nationalism•2002

The question of ‘face’ may be understood in various ways. It has long been asserted that one of the differences between the cultures of East Asia and those of the West is that the former is concerned with ‘face’ or social standing and prestige whereas the latter is more ‘guilt’ orientated. Typically, today’s Chinese spokesmen on foreign affairs refer to the period of foreign invasion and modern penetration of their country as the century of ‘sham…

What will the reversion of Hong Kong mean to the people of Hong Kong - and the rest of us - who invest, trade, and shop there? Over the last fifty years Hong Kong has served as a refuge from those who fled communism in China. It became the greatest entrepot and financial center on the Asian mainland. A stunning percentage of the world's trade passed through its magnificent harbor. The focus of this book is on the impact Chinese control is likely …

Introduction China's relations with the countries of Southeast Asia are characterized by changeability, ambiguity and uncertainty. Much of this arises from the tensions inherent in China's modern identity. China is both a revolutionary and a modernising power. At times its leaders have stressed the one more than the other, but neither one has ever been totally absent. Just as it would have been wrong to neglect the impulse for economic developmen…

But it also suggests that the economic links are buttressed by familial, social, historical and cultural ties of a peculiarly Chinese kind. These ties and links have developed between different Chinese comm…
