A Graph-Dynamic Perspective on Coordinative Structures, the Role of Affordance-Effectivity Relations in Action Selection, and the Self-Organization of Complex Activities
Meaningful parallels exist between the coordinative structures (CSs) involved in planning and controlling complex actions of the body (limbs, torso, head, face, eyes) in service of both mechanical (e.g., manipulation and/or transport of environmental objects) and social (e.g., inter-agent coordination) functions. While early treatments focused on CS state-dynamics and parameter-dynamics, attention has focused more recently on CS graph-dynamics. W…
Functional Neuroimaging Studies of Syntactic Processing in Sentence Comprehension: A Critical Selective Review
This article critically reviews recent papers that use functional neuroimaging to localize syntactic representations, Universal Grammar, parsing operations, and the working memory system that supports parsing. It is concluded that greater control over experimental conditions is needed for studies to provide convincing evidence about the neural basis for these cognitive functions
On Poetic Curiosity
On Poetic Curiosity David Caplan (bio) A response to Lori Emerson, Demystifying the Digital, Re-animating the Book: A Digital Poetics As I write this response on my office computer, three uneven stacks of books threaten to tumble across my desk. On top of the piles perch Jack Spicer’s The Collected Books (for a conference talk that needs expansion), an edition of Shakespeare’s Sonnets (which I just finished teaching), and my MLA ballot (due soon)…

Working Memory and Online Syntactic Processing in Alzheimer's Disease: Studies With Auditory Moving Window Presentation
Twenty patients with dementia of the Alzheimer's type (DAT) and 20 controls were tested on six tests of working memory and a test of online auditory sentence comprehension in which listening times for each phrase in the sentence, as well as the time required for an end-of-sentence plausibility judgment, were measured. The sentences differed in syntactic complexity. Patients had lower working memory scores than controls and performed more poorly o…

Verbal working memory and sentence comprehension
This target article discusses the verbal working memory system used in sentence comprehension. We review the concept of working memory as a short-duration system in which small amounts of information are simultaneously stored and manipulated in the service of accomplishing a task. We summarize the argument that syntactic processing in sentence comprehension requires such a storage and computational system. We then ask whether the working memory s…

Neurolinguistics and Linguistic Aphasiology: An Introduction
Disorders Affecting Comprehension of Syntactic Form: Preliminary Results and their Implications for Theories of Syntax and Parsing
Linguistic analyses of aphasic patients’ performances have developed to the point where interesting, non-trivial descriptions and explanations of pathological performances are available in linguistic and processing terms. The purpose of this paper is to present a short synopsis for linguists of several recent analyses of aphasic patients’ disturbances in the sphere of comprehension of syntactic form. This presentation is designed to illustrate so…
Agrammatism in sentence production without comprehension deficits: Reduced availability of syntactic structures and/or of grammatical morphemes? A case study
Neurolinguistics and Linguistic Aphasiology: An Introduction
This textbook provides a comprehensive introduction to the emerging fields of neurolinguistics and linguistic aphasiology. Reflecting the dramatic changes that have taken place in the study of language disorders over the last decade, David Caplan's approach is firmly interdisciplinary. He introduces concepts from the main contributing disciplines - neurology, linguistics, psychology and speech pathology - in such a way that they will be clearly u…
