A comparison between marine and terrestrial samples for the creation of a radiocarbon Chinchorro culture sequence at Morro de Arica, south-central Andean coast, Chile
Recent archaeological studies carried out at Morro de Arica, on the Pacific coast of the south-central Andean area, traditional burial core of the Chinchorro culture (∼7000−3000 cal BP), have enabled a comparative analysis of radiocarbon dates from burial and domestic spaces, considering the differences between dated marine and terrestrial samples. Consequently, we refined the chronological sequence of the Chinchorro culture and obtained a delta …
Paposo and the Genealogy of the Changos in the Atacama Desert Coast
There is some degree of inaccuracy around the ethnic and kinship categories frequently assigned (eighteenth to nineteenth centuries) to Paposo colonial local groups on the Atacama Desert coast (25°S). Furthermore, the data referring to colonial Paposo does not give a clear insight into the number of settlements that formed it, its exact geographical location, and its occupational frequencies due to how inaccessible this Chango indigenous enclave …
An archaeometric approach to biocontamination with manganese pigments in ancient marine hunter-gatherers of the Atacama Desert
The use of poisonous pigments for mortuary preparation in ancient hunter-gatherers allows us to investigate the relationship between this practice with socio-economic organization, mortuary ideology, and potential impacts on human health from overexposure to these dangerous compounds. About 6000 years ago, the Chinchorro people, maritime hunter-gatherers in the Atacama Desert, northern Chile, began mining manganese to ornament the dead, represent…
History of the Landscape and Rural Territory among the Indigenous Families of Paposo and Taltal on the Atacama Desert Coast
Recent ethnographic research undertaken with coastal inhabitants of the Taltal district on the Andean coast of South America facilitates corroboration of the development of a shared territorial map, with the extended family as a basic nucleus. These families, notwithstanding centuries of the imposition of the Encomienda system and mining industry, have historically occupied the rural territory from the housing/productive space of the majada, whos…

Significant ethnographic information rescued by the paposins researchers Lazo and Gutiérrez (Lazo y Téllez, 1984; Gutiérrez y Lazo, 1996), allows to interpret the historical conditions that have defined the Camanchaca or Chango families of the Paposo/Taltal coast during the XVIII and XIX centuries, with the presence of the social and parental category of the "aggregates" or "relatives", subjects coming from the southern Altiplano or from other co…
Rock art research recently conducted at the pastures of Nocui (region of Coquimbo, Chile) reveals the remarkable technical and iconographic development archieved in engravings during early ceramics period (ca. 2000 BP) and until the blossoming of Diaguita Culture (1000-1536 AD). This suggest that rupestrian expressions played a primary rol in the process of appropriation of the local territory, as carried out through a seasonal hunting and grazin…
