  • Some Thoughts on que: Description, Theory, and L2

    Margarita Suner•ARTICLE•Hispania•2000

To study the alleged ambiguity of bare que' it is necessary to contrast the bare que' hypothesis - a prepositionless que' is always a complementizer and never a relative pronoun - to the unique que' hypothesis - que' is a complementizer even when preceded by a preposition. The argumentation favors the bare que' hypothesis, a hypothesis which also demonstrates that the determiner in prepositionless art + que' is the indicator of a partial antecede…

  • Resumptive Restrictive Relatives: A Crosslinguistic Perspective

    Margarita Suner•ARTICLE•Language•1998•Cited by: 10

One of the aims of linguistic theory is to account for language variation. This article contributes to that objective by examining resumptive restrictive relative clauses crosslinguistically. The major claims are (1) the core-grammar distinction between conventional and resumptive restrictive relatives is due to the feature composition of the relative complementizer; (2) the prohibition against pied-piping that some languages adhere to correlates…

Margarita Suner, Jose Padilla-Rivera•ARTICLE•Hispania•1987•Cited by: 2

The topic of sequence of tenses and the subjunctive is not a new one to this journal. Over twenty years ago, Farley (1965) presented eleven patterns which defy the strict sequence of tenses between the verb in the main clause and the one in the embedded clause. His article was followed by others (e.g. Obaid 1967, Farley 1970) which contributed more data against the concordantia temporum principle (also known as consecutio temporum). But what does…

  • Demythologizing the Impersonal "Se" in Spanish

    Margarita Suner•ARTICLE•Hispania•1976•Cited by: 1

In such a case subject seems to be defined on purely semantic grounds. Chomsky (Aspects of the Theory of Syntax, Cambridge: MIT Press, 1965) showed that grammatical functions, such as subject, can be best expressed indirectly by the rewriting rules of the base phrase marker which provide the deep structure of sentences, so that subject is a syntactic function defined as [NP,S] (NP under S). If we adhere to Chomsky's definition of subject, then it…
