Tsinganos and Yiftos: Some Speculations on the Greek Gypsies
In 1956 Manos Hadzidakis composed music for a movie entitled , ‘Hurdy-Gurdy, Poverty and Self-Esteem’. While the film itself enjoyed a moderate success, one of the songs from it, ‘Carnation over the ear’, became enormously popular all over Greece. It was in the form of a modern folksong, and the refrain contained some words which have a direct bearing on the theme I wish to develop here: ‘hit your tambourine, babe,/you Turkish Gypsy girl!’
On Weighing Achilles' Winged Words
Friedrich & Redfield (in Lg. 54.263–88, 1978) have argued that Homer's heroes had their own idiolects. This view is untenable: it is inconsistent with the practices of oral poetry and with the classical doctrine of êthos. Their stylometric tests are unconvincing because of inadequate sampling, an unreliable textual tradition, and a defective rationale in applying stylistic criteria

Influence of Greek on the Speech of a Greek Gypsy Community
This paper deals with the influence exerted by a host language (Greek) upon a minority language in Greece (Romany). It is based on oral data which I collected in 1973-4 in the suburb of Agia Varvara a few miles north-west of Athens where several hundred Gypsies have long resided. After describing the pertinent sociological factors which regulate the interaction of Greeks and Gypsies in this community, I shall discuss the linguistic evidence which…

Structuralism and Literary Tradition
Since the Committee on the Language Program of the American Council of Learned Societies has recently begun to issue a series of structural sketches of various languages, it is evident with the appearance of the first monograph in this series (French, by Robert A. Hall Jr.) that the time is ripe to raise a general question which has hitherto been too carelessly passed over: are the methods of structural linguistics applicable in the same degree t…

The Etymology of Greek ὁ ἡ τὸ δεῖνα
The indefinite pronoun, ὁ ἡ τὸ δεῖνα ‘so-and-so’, like other Greek pronominal stems (cf. αὐτvός, ἐκεῖνος ) is difficult to analyze, and even more difficult to etymologize. It has been much discussed in the literature and a number of ingenious suggestions have been made; nonetheless, as discerning a judge as Gustav Meyer noted long ago that the word was ‘in Ursprung and Bildung dunkel’ and concluded his analysis with a non-committal ‘non liquet’

Modern Greek trik and Albanian triske: Problems in Derivation
The word trík is a modern loanword in Greek, of uncertain date though probably not older than the beginning of this century. According to the definition in the Mega lexikon tēs hellēnikës glōssēs of D. Dēmētrakos (Vol. 9; Athens, 1951), this is a word of the spoken language which means ‘device, deceptive manner, artful strategem’; in short, it has some of the meanings of the English word trick. Since the last war, however, trík has been used in a…
