Compliance and obedience in an Alabama prison faith dorm
This article considers how the Christian obedience of male prisoners inside the 'faith dorm' of a maximum-security prison in the US state of Alabama overlaps with penal compliance. I argue that prisoners' devotion to faith-dorm strictures is not straightforward rule-following but forges social and Christly intimacy. Faith-dorm obedience foregrounds the theological, and it reveals non-church institutional domains as theologically dynamic and capab…

Regional Organizations in Conflict Management
The end of colonialism and the decline of Cold War bipolarity mean that the United States and the Soviet Union must find new ways of relating to a Third World that is growing increasingly influential and is seeking ways to be master of its own destinies. Over the past decade and more, there has been a marked growth in regional organizations within the Third World designed to deal with the related problems of solving internal disputes and reducing…

A View from Washington
American attitudes towards the Third World are passing through a critical period. Especially because of the Vietnam experience, Americans are plagued with self-doubts and disillusioned with the results of previous involvement. America cannot, however, turn its back on the Third World; it finds important interests there, as well as a pressing humanitarian challenge. The present trend in United States policy involves a rejection of the role of worl…

Foreign Relations of the Asian Communist Satellites
ONLY A FEW YEARS AGO, a reference to might well have been misinterpreted, and even today the term is not without its ambiguities. It could scarcely be regarded any longer as including Communist China, but the question, whose are the Peoples Republics of Mongolia, Vietnam and Korea, actually is not always easy to answer. Obviously the most important of all three are those which they have with their allies in the Communist Bloc-especially with Chin…
Peking, Moscow, and the Underdeveloped Areas
THE year 1960 saw the first major open break in the Sino-Soviet alliance. Beginning with the Hongqi (Red Flag) articles of April 1 and 15, and receiving a quietus only after the November conference of 81 Communist parties in Moscow, the divergent views of the two Communist partners were laid bare to public view. Western observers have been virtually overwhelmed by this windfall of fascinating material, and speculation as to its meaning has been r…
