  • Tone Sandhi and vowel deletion in Margi

    Open Access•Bernard Tranel•ARTICLE•Studies in African Linguistics•1993

Within the theoretical framework of nonlinear phonology, this paper proposes an account of tone sandhi and vowel deletion in Margi, a Chadic language spoken in Northern Nigeria. The database is Hoffman's Grammar of the Margi Language. Language-specific tonal processes in Margi are shown to originate in tone trapping, i.e., the impossibility for a tone to anchor to a skeletal slot by a universal mechanism. The paper identifies the circumstances le…

  • CVC light syllables, geminates and Moraic Theory

    Open Access•Bernard Tranel•ARTICLE•Phonology•1991

The functional equivalence of CVV and CVC syllables, as opposed to CV syllables, is a time-honoured observation holding true for numerous languages over a variety of phonological and morphological phenomena, including stress assignment (cf. Newman 1972 for a review). Traditionally, the opposition between the two types of syllables has been informally described by reference to syllable weight: CVV and CVC syllables are heavy, CV syllables are ligh…

Ce livre propose une approche critique des publications traitant de la phonologie du francais envisagee sous l'angle des theories generatives. Il se centre sur le vocalisme du francais contemporain, a partir du livre de S. A. Schane, French phonology and morphology (1968). Apres une analyse des aspects theoriques et methodologiques des propositions de Schane, ainsi que leur mise en perspective par rapport a d'autres publications (d'inspiration ge…

  • A Generative Treatment of the Prefix in- of Modern French

    Bernard Tranel•ARTICLE•Language•1976•Cited by: 2

This paper offers a generative treatment of the phonological behavior of the prefix in - of Modern French. It is shown that the seemingly perplexing distribution of some of its allomorphs before stems with initial sonorant consonants is related to the predictability of the meaning of complex words from the meanings of their component parts, the semantic structure of the words (relative scope), and the productivity of word-formation rules. The for…
