  • Antifunctionality in Shawi split ergativity, a processing analysis

Open Access•Luis Miguel Rojas-Berscia, Corentin Bourdeau et al.•ARTICLE•Revista Brasileira de Linguística…•2023

In this article, as a follow-up of Rojas-Berscia and Bourdeau (2017), we study morphological ergativity in Shawi (Kawapanan) using a dedicated experimental design. Shawi displays ergative-marking in an opposite direction from Silverstein's Nominal Hierarchy (NH) (Silverstein 1976). We claim this pattern to be antifunctional, given the lack of internal syntactic cues that explain why ergativity is omitted or completely obligatory in cases where th…

  • The natural logic of language and cognition

    Open Access•Pieter A M Seuren, Pieter Seuren•ARTICLE•Pragmatics Quarterly Publication…•2022

This paper aims at an explanation of the discrepancies between natural intuitions and standard logic in terms of a distinction between NATURAL and CONSTRUCTED levels of cognition, applied to the way human cognition deals with sets. NATURAL SET THEORY (NST) restricts standard set theory cutting it down to naturalness. The restrictions are then translated into a theory of natural logic. The predicate logic resulting from these restrictions turns ou…

  • Saving the Square of Opposition

    Open Access•Pieter A M Seuren, Pieter Seuren•ARTICLE•History and Philosophy of Logic•2021

Contrary to received opinion, the Aristotelian Square of Opposition (square) is logically sound, differing from standard modern predicate logic (SMPL) only in that it restricts the universe U of cognitively constructible situations by banning null predicates, making it less unnatural than SMPL. U-restriction strengthens the logic without making it unsound. It also invites a cognitive approach to logic. Humans are endowed with a cognitive predicat…

  • Essentials of Semantic Syntax

    Open Access•Pieter Seuren•ARTICLE•Cadernos de Linguística e Teoria…•2021

Semantic Syntax (SeSyn), originally called Generative Semantics, is an offshoot of Chomskyan generative grammar (ChoGG), rejected by Chomsky and his school in the late 1960s. SeSyn is the theory of algorithmical grammars producing the well-formed sentences of a language L from the corresponding semantic input, the Semantic Analysis (SA), represented as a traditional tree structure diagram in a specific formal language of incremental predicate log…

  • Saussure and his intellectual environment

    Open Access•Pieter A M Seuren, Pieter Seuren•ARTICLE•History of European Ideas•2016•Cited by: 1

The present study paints the intellectual environment in which Ferdinand de Saussure developed his ideas about language and linguistics during the fin de siècle. It sketches his dissatisfaction with that environment to the extent that it touched on linguistics, and shows the new course he was trying to steer on the basis of ideas that seemed to open new and exciting perspectives, even though they were still vaguely defined. As Saussure himself wa…

  • Logico-cognitive structure in the lexicon

    Open Access•Pieter A M Seuren, Pieter Seuren et al.•ARTICLE•Language•2014•Cited by: 4•References: 5

This study is a prolegomenon to a formal theory of the natural growth of conceptual and lexical fields. Negation, in the various forms in which it occurs in language, is found to be a powerful indicator. Other than in standard logic, natural language negation selects its complement within universes of discourse that are, for practical and functional reasons, restricted in various ways and to different degrees. It is hypothesized that a system of …

  • A reaction to Jackendoff’s discussion note

    Open Access•Pieter A M Seuren, Pieter Seuren•ARTICLE•Language•2012

A reaction to Jackendoff’s discussion note Pieter A. M. Seuren It was with great pleasure that I read Ray Jackendoff’s discussion note ‘What is the human language faculty? Two views’, published in Language 87.3.586–624 (September 2011). Since it was not presented as an ordinary article but as a ‘discussion note’, it seemed appropriate to ask the editors of Language to print a short reaction, meant to make a positive contribution to the discussion…

  • A final reaction to Jackendoff

    Open Access•Pieter A M Seuren, Pieter Seuren•ARTICLE•Language•2012

Ray Jackendoff and I seem to concur in most essential points. At the level of overall architecture, his parallel grammar model (Jackendoff 2002:199) and my model of SEMANTIC SYNTAX (SeSyn; Seuren 1996) bear a nontrivial resemblance.Apart from technical details such as the properties of the rule systems concerned, these models seem to differmainly in two respects

    Open Access•Pieter A M Seuren, Pieter Seuren•ARTICLE•Journal of Linguistics•2000•Cited by: 2•References: 2

It is argued that presupposition is a semantic phenomenon originating in a distinction between two kinds of satisfaction conditions for predicates, the PRECONDITIONS generating presu…

  • Soaps and Serials

Pieter A M Seuren, Pieter Seuren•ARTICLE•Journal of Pidgin and Creole…•1994

Serial verbs are "in," or so it seems, in theoretical linguistics. The interest was sparked off mainly by recent work in African as well as in Caribbean Creole languages, where serial verbs are common, and, though to a lesser extent, by the observation of similar phenomena in the languages of China and surrounding areas. In general, not much theoretical ink is spilled over African languages or creole languages, but of late quite a few theoretical l…

  • Burton-Roberts on presupposition and negation

    Open Access•Pieter A M Seuren, Pieter Seuren•ARTICLE•Journal of Linguistics•1990•Cited by: 10•References: 3

In his paper ‘On Horn's dilemma: presupposition and negation’ Burton-Roberts (1989a) presents an ambitious programme, formulated right at the outset. He seeks to establish three points: (i) Under the ‘standard logical definition of presupposition’ a pre-suppositional semantics is INCOMPATIBLE with a SEMANTICALLY AMBIGUOUS NEGATION operator (SAN), on pain of the theory being rendered ‘empirically empty and theoretically trivial’,. (ii) From this i…

Since the late 1960s a variety of theories has been proposed for the grammatical treatment of quantifiers in natural-language sentences. In the linguistic tradition of transformational grammar the so-called lowering analysis was proposed (Lakojfl969; McCawley 1973: ch.14,17,18).Very soon after that Montague's famous analysis of quantifiers known as the PTQ analysis was presented (Montague 1974).And recently the theory of generalized quantifiers (B…

  • Presupposition and Negation

    Pieter A M Seuren, Pieter Seuren•ARTICLE•Journal of Semantics•1988

This paper is an attempt to show that given the available observations on the behaviour of negation and presuppositions there is no simpler explanation than to assume that natural language has two distinct negation operators, the minimal negation which preserves presuppositions and the radical negation which does not. The three-valued logic emerging from this distinction, and especially its model-theory, are discussed in detail. It is, however, s…
