International migration and the advent of a new demographic era
The paper explores whether international migration is linked to currently decreasing levels of fertility in high birth rates countries, thereby to the advent of a stage of population degrowth at the world's level. Methodology is in two steps. First, a global dataset is assembled comprising 13 variables for each country. For the country itself: emigrant stock, total fertility rate, girls' enrolment rate, women's labour force participation, global …

Migration From North Africa and The Middle East
The countries of the Southern and Eastern Mediterranean (SEM) and those in Sub-Saharan Africa (SSA) are crucial to the development of the world economy. Highly skilled migration to and from these regions is key to the recent socio-political transformations that have occurred across the world. Despite this, in the states concerned, skilled migration remains an underlying 'issue of concern', rather than at the top of political agendas, leading to a…
International Migration and the Nation State in Arab Countries
International migration and the nation state have had, in all times and in all places, a difficult relationship. While the nation state is a community that recognises itself as one people sharing one territory and one narrative, international migrants are perceived as transgressors to the founding principle of the nation: emigrants, because they live outside the territory of which they still share the narrative; immigrants, because they are not y…
International Migration and the Demographic Transition
The paper explores the relationship between the demographic transition and international migration, that is, between population dynamics and direct connectivity between peoples. The first part examines how ideas conveyed by migrants to non-migrants of their community of origin are susceptible to impact on practices that lead to the reduction of birth rates in source countries of migration and concludes that international migration may be one of t…
Immigration without Inclusion
Migrants represent between one-third and four-fifths of the population in the Gulf states. Despite their sizable numbers, migrants can only have temporary residency, they have no access to citizenship, and they have limited membership in society, conditions which are unique to the Gulf states as destination countries. The first section argues that non-nationals have been instrumental in shaping the social link between nationals, and the relations…
Work, Refuge, Transit
Southern and Eastern Mediterranean (SEM) countries have recently turned into receivers of migrants, but they have neither the institutions nor the policies that would allow them to integrate migrants. Therefore, most migrants in SEM countries found themselves in irregular situation. Using a variety of statistical sources, official and non-official, the article establishes that out of 5.6 million immigrants living in SEM countries in the mid-2000s…
The Demographic Benefit Of International Migration
It seems sensible that international migration has no impact on the size of world population. However, this paper argues that international migration may have resulted in a smaller world population than in the non migration scenario. The author claims that most of recent migration has been from high to low birth-rate countries, and since migrants typically adopt and send back ideas that prevail in host countries, they are potential agents of the …
Women in Arab Countries
Progress in the empowerment of Arab women was found to be low in a 2002 report. Yet Arab women’s status is not reflected in continuing high fertility, which in 2000 had dropped sharply in one generation to 3.4. This paper discusses why fertility decline could nevertheless have taken place in the Arab countries. Islam has not stood in the way of fertility decline, as Iran and Algeria show. From the mid-1970s to 1980s, subsidised consumption throug…
Arab Migration to Europe
Growing Arab migration to Europe is a likely scenario for the coming years, poorly prepared for by current policies. The paper examines three reasons for this scenario: new patterns of family-building in Arab countries; aging in Europe; and the emergence of a new demand for migrant labor. While the ongoing establishment of free trade may increase migratory pressures, government policies remain potentially conflicting –on the Arab side, optimizing…

Protracted National Conflict and Fertility Change
This article examines atypical trends of birth rates and fertility-their irregular time trends and relatively high levels-among Palestinians and Israelis in light of the protracted conflict between them and related political developments. Migration, in itself a major dimension of the conflict, has been formative in contrasting evolutions of fertility: convergence among the Jews, originating from various countries but gradually coalescing in Jewis…

The Birth of a State Statistic. The Egyptian Census of 1848. The census of 1846-1848 marked the birth of population statistics in Egypt, yet the document has never been analysed or published. Since the Cairo National Archives holds the complete set of primary documents, they may be examined 150 years later for the ways contempory inquiries were conducted, and seen as an operation responding to the criteria of the time. This was the first census o…

State Policies and the Birth Rate in Egypt
One reason why the UN chose to hold the 1994 International Conference on Population and Development (ICPD) in Cairo was to acknowledge both the countrys strong national policy to limit the birth rate and the results that the policy seemed to have achieved. For some years Egypt recorded a substantial decline in its population growth rate apparently the result of several decades of effort toward that end. However neither before nor after the ICPD w…

A method for deriving mortality estimates from incomplete vital Statistics
Although they are available in many developing countries vital registration records are very little used for mortality estimation which is still mainly based on census returns. However, defective death records may yield accurate estimations of mortality. This procedure requires few data only; a sex-age distribution of the population (preferably at the middle of a period) and a sexage distribution of deaths, either derived from vital records or fr…

Rapid Estimations of Maternal Mortality in Countries with Defective Data
Maternal mortality is not easy to measure directly in countries in which it remains a public-health problem. Registers in which the cause of death is reported provide a useful tool, if their coverage can be assessed. In Bamako, they showed an average maternal mortality of about 300 deaths per 100,000 live births, characterized by a pronounced U-shaped distribution: the risk of dying was largest for mothers below 20 years and above 35 years. It wa…
