  • Limited input

    Open Access•Ad Backus, Helena Halmari•ARTICLE•International Journal of…•2024

Aims and Objectives: The aim of this introductory chapter to Effects of Limited Input, a Special Issue of the International Journal of Bilingualism, is to give a brief overview of how the topic of limited linguistic input is situated within the study of bilingualism and language contact. The seven chapters—which present samples of the varied circumstances in which bilinguals acquire, use, maintain, and sometimes suppress areas of their languages—…

  • Limited input and the acquisition of Finnish

    Open Access•Helena Halmari•ARTICLE•International Journal of…•2024

Aims and Objectives/Research Question: This is a case study of a toddler acquiring Finnish in a trilingual (Finnish–Spanish–English) setting. Despite the apparent ease of the child’s acquisition of Finnish, the pressure of the majority language (English) suppresses the use of the acquired minority language. Is it feasible to expect an early-childhood minority language to be maintained at the level of production? Design/Methodology: Video-recordin…

  • Language Mixing as a Persuasive Strategy in Oxford, MS Bodley 649

    Open Access•Helena Halmari•ARTICLE•Medieval Worlds•2021

One of the salient features of Oxford, MS Bodley 649, a fifteenth-century sermon collection, is its frequent switching from Latin to English â and back to Latin again. Building on Wenzelâ s (1994) groundbreaking work on macaronic sermons, I discuss the rhetorical characteristics of English elements in MS Bodley 649, with the purpose of showing that language mixing in this collection is not random but rather one of the rhetorical devices that the …

In this introduction to the Journal of Finnish Studies theme issue entitled The Making of Finland: The Era of the Grand Duchy, the editors outline, in broad strokes, the years when Finland was part of Russia. The second part of the chapter consists of a discussion of the eight chapters that make up this article collection. The contributors approach the topic of the Grand Duchy of Finland from multiple—and even surprising—perspectives, showing how…

  • On the language of the Clinton-Dole presidential campaign debates

    Helena Halmari•ARTICLE•Journal of Language and Politics•2008•Cited by: 3•References: 24

This article investigates the rhetorical strategies deployed by President Clinton and Senator Dole during the 1996 presidential debates. Clinton resorted to implicit persuasion and audience-oriented rhetorical strategies, while Doles persuasion was more explicit, and he did not avoid the use of dispreferred strategies such as opening his answers with the discourse particlewell. There were differences in the candidates use of personal pronouns: Do…

  • “I'm forgetting both”

    Open Access•Helena Halmari•ARTICLE•International Journal of…•2005

This article is a case study investigating the maintenance of Finnish in the language of two young Finnish-American bilinguals. The main source of data is a 90mins audio-taped conversation between the research participants, which was recorded in Finland after they had lived eight years in the United States and become fully fluent in English. Three main questions are addressed: (1) Are there signs of first language attrition or change from Finland…

  • Government and Codeswitching

    Helena Halmari•BOOK•Government and Codeswitching•1997

Bilingual codeswitching is a complex, multifaceted phenomenon, which calls for explanations on several different linguistic levels. This volume focuses on one such level: the level of syntax. An explanation for the regularities and consistencies in the codeswitching patterns of American Finns in their spontaneous conversations is sought for in the Universal Grammar -based principle of government as realized in case-assignment and agreement relati…

  • On Accessibility and Coreference

    Open Access•Helena Halmari•ARTICLE•Nordic Journal of Linguistics•1994

Anaphors and the grammatical roles of their antecedents are examined in Finnish language data in order to establish a correlation between two universal hierarchies: the Keenan & Comrie (1977) NP Accessibility Hierarchy and the hierarchy of accessibility of referential expressions (Accessibility Marking Scale) (Ariel 1985, 1988, 1990). A more or less clear correlation pattern between the type of anaphoric NPs and the grammatical roles of their ant…

  • Intercultural Business Telephone Conversations

    Helena Halmari•ARTICLE•Applied Linguistics•1993

Twelve business telephone conversations were analyzed in order to detect intercultural differences between speakers of Finnish and speakers of American English. In all the conversations, the other calling party was the same: a Finnish businessman. Five conversations were carried out in Finnish with Finnish business partners or clients, and seven in English with Englishspeaking businessmen in the United States. The main episode structure of both F…

  • Dividing the world

    Helena Halmari•ARTICLE•Multilingua•1993•Cited by: 1•References: 1

  • Structural relations and Finnish-English code switching

    Open Access•Helena Halmari•ARTICLE•Linguistics•1993
