  • We definitely need to be less gay”

    Open Access•Benedict J L Rowlett, Benedict JL Rowlett•ARTICLE•Sexualities•2025•References: 19

Under a climate of enhanced national security in Hong Kong, the staging of the Gay Games, a mass-scale LGBT + international sporting and cultural event held in 2023, came under attack from politicians for its “subversive” potentials. Through an analysis of interviews with volunteers working for the Games, this article focuses on negotiations of language which shaped the messaging strategies thought necessary to respond to these threats and ensure…

  • Merging mobilities

    Benedict J L Rowlett, Brian W King•ARTICLE•Critical Discourse Studies•2022•Cited by: 3•References: 11

In this article, we query binaries of mobility and immobility in language studies via an empirical focus on language/social practices in a site that bridges the global North and global South. To do so, we work from a Southern praxis perspective to analyze discourses/knowledges informing the performance of accounts from Cambodian men, interviewed about transactional same-sex relationship practices between (ostensibly immobile) local men and (osten…

  • The Amazingly Fabulous Tuk tuk Race”

    Open Access•Benedict J L Rowlett, C Go•ARTICLE•Social Semiotics•2022•Cited by: 4•References: 13

In this semiotic landscape study we examine the 2019 pride celebrations in Phnom Penh, Cambodia, with a focus on its main event, the “Amazingly Fabulous Tuk Tuk Race.” This event emphasizes mobility vis-à-vis select participants who race in decorated tuk tuks, the city's iconic everyday mode of transport, across the city to complete a scavenger hunt. The study analyzes these tuk tuks as forms of mobile signs that temporarily queer the streets of …

  • Tracing trans-regional discursive flows in Pink Dot Hong Kong promotional videos

    Open Access•Benedict J L Rowlett, C Go•ARTICLE•Journal of Language and Sexuality•2021•Cited by: 2•References: 28

In this article, we extend discourse analytical research that has focused on Pink Dot events in Singapore to events in Hong Kong. As such we engage queer Sinophone perspectives to examine the simultaneously local and transregional epistemological flows that converge and diverge within the margins of the Sinophone cultural sphere. Using a multimodal analysis of two Pink Dot Hong Kong promotional videos, we investigate the extent to which these vid…

  • Second language socialization in the margins

    Benedict J L Rowlett•ARTICLE•Multilingua•2020•Cited by: 1•References: 24

This article explores aspects of second language socialization with respect to same gender relationships formed in the queer spaces of Siem Reap, a major tourist city in Cambodia. In order to explore the processes of socialization that emerged from ethnographic fieldwork in this setting as a key factor informing these relationship practices, I present an analysis of narrative accounts from interviews with local men. These English speaking Cambodi…

  • The lines are blurred’

    Benedict J L Rowlett•ARTICLE•Gender and Language•2019•Cited by: 3

This paper addresses recent calls in the field of sociolinguistics to engage more fully with the language of sexual transaction. In the case of this study, the focus is on transnational same-sex relationships, locally termed as 'sponsorship' arrangements, which are formed in the 'ethnosexual contact zones' of Siem Reap, a major tourist city in Cambodia. Utilising a positioning analysis of narrative accounts from local and non-local men, I will sh…

  • Affect as narrative action in the Global South

    Open Access•Benedict J L Rowlett•ARTICLE•Narrative Inquiry•2018•Cited by: 2•References: 14

This paper focuses on the performance of small stories from two Cambodian men interviewed by the researcher about the relationships they form with men from the Global North. The analysis attends to the empirical significance of these performances by focusing on the mobilization of affect as an interactional linguistic and narrative resource that foregrounds social action in this context. In this way, these small stories reveal how these men may c…
