From Social Reform to Fundamentalism
Arthur T. Pierson (1837–1911) was a noted Presbyterian pastor, writer, and advocate of world missions. His career spanned a turbulent era in American Presbyterianism which was reflective of the growing challenges faced by Protestant denominations and illustrates one path some Presbyterians took over the last decades of the nineteenth century and into the twentieth. Born into the antebellum northern evangelical world of the Second Great Awakening …

From religious liberty to faith in America
In 1960, John Kennedy, the Democratic nominee for president, appeared before the Greater Houston Ministerial Association to address concerns about what the election of a Catholic would mean for Protestant America. His speech was a classic defense of the separation of church and state and the right to privacy in matters of religion. In 2007, in his first, unsuccessful run for the presidential nomination of the Republican Party, Mitt Romney gave a …
Evangelical Aspirations and Cold War Realities
In 1959, Billy Graham visited the Soviet Union as a tourist. In his autobiography, he attributed his desire to conduct evangelistic services behind the Iron Curtain to visiting Lenin Stadium in Moscow and imagining it full of people listening to his sermon. “I bowed my head,” Graham wrote, “and prayed that someday God would open the door for us to preach the Gospel in Moscow and elsewhere in eastern Europe.”1 From 1959 until the fall of the Berli…

Strangers in Zion
In Strangers in Zion: Fundamentalists in the South, 1900-1950 William R. Glass tells the story of the growth of Protestant fundamentalism in the American South and the subsequent conflicts between different branches of the movement. Glass argues that despite the generally conservative character of Southern society and religion, fundamentalists during 1900-1950 had difficulty making a home for themselves in the South, although they did gain a foot…

Linguistic Diversity and Inclusion in the Foreign Language Classroom
Discussions about inclusion in the foreign language classroom should address the issues of linguistic diversity and dialectal sensitivity. Foreign language departments are particularly vulnerable to linguistic conflict, but they can address such conflicts proactively. We argue that a linguistically diverse pool of teachers can work together more effectively by using an additive rather than a subtractive view of linguistic diversity. We discuss mo…
Null anaphora in Spanish second language acquisition
The acquisition of Spanish null pronouns is an optimal domain for comparing the predictions of generativist vs. probabilistic approaches to language acquisition. This paper presents two studies on the acquisition of null subjects by English adult learners of Spanish as a second language. The first investigates a low frequency construction in which the antecedent of the pronoun is a quantifier, and the distribution is regulated by a principle of U…
Contemporary Perspectives on the Acquisition of Spanish
Perspectives in & Out
The willingness of Hollywood to reinforce and even invent negative gay stereotypes has been well documented in works such as Vito Russo's The Celluloid Closet. The book and the subsequent film of the same name observed the movie industry's tendency to polarize gay men and women into two equally reprehensible groups–villains or buffoons. Such reductive portraits ignored diversity within the gay community. It is not, however, accurate to characteri…
