The AP Linguistics initiative
In May 2016, the Executive Committee of the Linguistic Society of America approved formation of an ad hoc AP Linguistics Committee (APLC) to study the creation of an Advanced Placement Linguistics course and examination for US high schools. In January 2017, the APLC convened and voted to proceed with the drafting of a formal AP Linguistics proposal to the College Board and to take whatever preparatory steps were required in that process. In this …
Ellipsis in Noun Phrases
In early analyses of nominal ellipsis in generative syntax, ellipsis was analyzed as null anaphora, where missing material is interpreted under identity with an antecedent in much the same way as a lexical pronoun. Ellipsis was analyzed either as the result of a deletion transformation, in which ellipsis results from deletion of a lexical pro‐form, one , or as a base‐generated empty category subject to rules of interpretation. Within the Principl…

Ellipsis: Functional Heads, Licensing, and Identification
Lobeck elaborates a theory of ellipsis which brings the phenomenon under the aegis of very general and universal principles. She argues that the Empty Category Principle (ECP) constrain the distribution of ellipsis just as it constrains the distributions of traces and null pronouns, which has implications not only for ellipsis but for the study of empty categories as well.
Strong agreement and identification: Evidence from ellipsis in English
I propose that ellipted constituents in English DP (N' ellipsis), CP (sluicing), and IP (VP ellipsis) are empty, non-NP pronominals, licensed and identified under the same condition that constrains nonarbitrary NP pro; [e] must be governed by an X-0 specified for strong agreement. Strong agreement must be broadened to include features that identify non-NP pro, an empty category that crucially differs from NP pro in also requiring reconstruction f…
On Verb Fronting, Inflection Movement, and Aux Support
Recent analyses of word order and clause structure suggest that natural language syntax employs competing processes of Verb Fronting (VF) and Inflection Movement (IM) for the realization of Tense and Agreement (TNS and AGR) features on verb stems. As the names suggest, Verb Fronting is a process that raises a verb from the head of VP to INFL and INFL Movement is a rule that lowers the contents of INFL to the head of VP. Both rules are assumed to …
