  • Exploring tonal contrasts in Dharamshala Tibetan using mathematical modeling, statistical modeling, and machine learning algorithms

Open Access•Sharmistha Sarkar, Somdev Kar et al.•ARTICLE•Language and Linguistics 語言暨語言學•2026

This paper examines the tonal system of Dharamshala Tibetan (DT) through a comprehensive phonetic and phonological analysis, employing statistical tests, regression modeling, mathematical modeling, and machine learning algorithms (MLAs). Our aim has been to determine the number and nature of tonal contrasts in DT, an issue that remains unresolved to date. The stimuli (tonemes), consisting of two-way and three-way meaning contrasts, are designed b…

  • Reduplication Initiated Through Discourse Markers: A Case of Hadoti

    Open Access•Gulab Chand, Somdev Kar•ARTICLE•Dialectologia•2020

Reduplication is a common morphological process in many languages, particularly in South Asia. This study focuses on the reduplication phenomenon in Hadoti, where it ensues with the help of a discourse marker /rə/, functioning as an emphasizing agent in the process. This marker comes between the base and the reduplicant for expressing emphasis in work or action or verb (as in /kha rə kha/ ‘do eat,’ etc.). In Hadoti, /rə/ functions as a vocative c…

  • Sonority and Reduplication in Hadoti

Open Access•Gulab Chand, Somdev Kar•ARTICLE•Journal of Universal Language•2017

The prosodic features like sonority motivate the pattern of reduplication in Hadoti. This regional variety of the Rajasthani language is spoken in the Western part of India (Rajasthan). Its reduplication process is highly productive, both morphologically and phonologically. The Optimality theoretic approach to the analysis of the phonological patterning of the reduplication process in Hadoti gives a theoretical account of the phenomena. Reduplica…
