Gender and Number Agreement by Spanish Heritage and Second Language Children in Dual Immersion
This study examines number and gender concord in the nominal domain by heritage ( HL ) and second language (L2) children in Spanish-English dual language immersion ( DLI ). Participants were 36 HL and 90 L2 children in their 5th and 6th year of DLI and 55 age-matched control children from a Spanish-majority environment. All children completed the same spontaneous written production task. Results indicate that Spanish HL children retained their cr…
Acquisition of Spanish verbal morphology by child bilinguals: Overregularization by heritage speakers and second language learners
The current study analyzes Spanish present tense morphology with a focus on overregularization. It examines written production from two groups of English/Spanish bilingual children in a dual immersion setting, Spanish heritage language (SHL) speakers ( n = 21) and Spanish second language (SL2) learners ( n = 41), comparing them to age-matched (nine to ten years old) Spanish majority language children ( n = 15). Spanish majority children show full…
Present tense verb morphology of Spanish HL and L2 children in dual immersion: Feature Reassembly revisited
We provide a snapshot of childhood morphology development in our investigation of two profiles of bilinguals (age 9–10) in an English-Spanish dual immersion academic setting: Spanish heritage language (SHL, n = 21) and second language (SL2, n = 41) children. Three tasks were given to the 62 bilinguals and 15 age-matched controls (Spanish first language, SL1): oral comprehension of 20 singular-plural present verbs, written sentence production of 1…

Acquisition of L2 French Object Pronouns by Advanced Anglophone Learners
The role native language transfer plays in L2 acquisition raises the question of whether L1 constitutes a permanent representational deficit to mastery of the L2 morphosyntax and prosody or if it can eventually be overcome. Earlier research has shown that beginning and low intermediate Anglophone L2 French learners are insensitive to French morphosyntactic and prosodic constraints in using in situ pronouns transferred from the L1. The prosodic tr…

Processing of gender and number agreement in late Spanish bilinguals
Drawing from Sagarra & Herschensohn (2010, 2011), we evaluate current approaches to grammatical representation and processing of L2 gender and number agreement in Spanish determiner phrases (DPs), some advocating incomplete acquisition and computation of L2 grammatical features and others claiming native-like representation and computation of new grammatical values. Testing Spanish monolinguals, beginning and intermediate L2 learners, we evaluate…
The Cambridge Handbook of Second Language Acquisition
What is language and how can we investigate its acquisition by children or adults? What perspectives exist from which to view acquisition? What internal constraints and external factors shape acquisition? What are the properties of interlanguage systems? This comprehensive 31-chapter handbook is an authoritative survey of second language acquisition (SLA). Its multi-perspective synopsis on recent developments in SLA research provides significant …
Romance Linguistics 2010: Selected papers from the 40th Linguistic Symposium on Romance Languages (LSRL), Seattle, Washington, March 2010
This volume contains a selection of nineteen peer-reviewed papers from the 40th annual Linguistic Symposium on Romance Languages (LSRL) held at the University of Washington in March 2010. In addition to overviews of Romance linguistics by the editor and by Jurgen Klausenburger in the keynote article, contributions cover a variety of linguistic theoretical topics and a range of Romance languages, including Old and Modern French, Italian, Romanian …
Proficiency and Animacy Effects on L2 Gender Agreement Processes During Comprehension
This study examines whether adult second language (L2) learners of an ungendered first language (L1) are sensitive to gender congruency (grammatical feature absent in the L1) and noun animacy (semantic feature present in the L1) when processing L2 gender concord and whether L2 proficiency level determines such sensitivity. To address these questions, 63 Spanish monolinguals and 69 beginning and 64 intermediate Anglophone late learners of L2 Spani…

Français langue seconde: From functional categories to functionalist variation
Four recent volumes on acquisition of French by different populations cover a range of areas, particularly the development of verbal tense/agreement and nominal gender/concord in first language (L1) acquirers, as opposed to second language (L2) learners; the generalizability of grammatical deficits (e.g. difficulty acquiring parametrized features different from the L1); and variation in acquisition between functional features from different domai…

Missing inflection in second language French: Accidental Infinitives and Other Verbal Deficits
This article re-examines the morphology/functional category debate in the light of empirical data drawn from the author's longitudinal study of two intermediate learners of French as a second language (L2). It argues that inflectional deficits -which appear both as nonfinite verbs and as other morphological errors in the interlanguage data -support neither a codependence of syntax and morphology (Eubank, 1993/94) nor a gradual structure-building …
