Putting a Ring on It: Men’s Work in the Underground Economy and the Decision to Marry
Men’s employment is an important predictor of union formation and couples’ transitions to marriage, but previous research has not investigated the extent to which the type of men’s employment affects the likelihood of marriage. To fill this gap, we use multinomial logistic regression and data from the Fragile Families and Child Wellbeing Study (N = 3,128) to explore whether men’s employment in the underground economy inhibits or promotes the tran…
Paternal Incarceration and Children’s Social-Emotional Functioning at Age Nine: Why Fathers’ Violence Matters
Research documents the consequences of parental incarceration for children’s well-being, and studies have begun to explore heterogeneity in parental incarceration’s influence on child outcomes. This study investigates the effect of paternal incarceration on children’s social competence. Using data from the Fragile Families and Child Wellbeing Study, a longitudinal study of new parents in urban areas, I examine (1) the effect of recent paternal in…
The blame game: News, blame, and young homicide victims
Media have represented blame in homicide cases as attributable to a victim or an offender; we provide a more nuanced category of shared blame. We examine stories covering young homicide victims to demonstrate how shared blame is operationalized in print news, noting stark differences across a victim’s race and gender. We conduct a content analysis of the Orlando Sentinel newspaper and police reports from Seminole County and Sanford, Florida, from…
Incapacitated Involvement: Incarceration and Fatherhood in Fragile Families at Age 9
We use data from the Fragile Families and Child Wellbeing Study to expand knowledge about the impact of paternal incarceration on fathering in three specific ways: (a) we explore fathers' involvement with children in middle childhood, (b) we examine the extent to which we observe similar reports of father involvement across mothers and fathers, and (c) we assess how paternal incarceration influences children's own assessments of their relationshi…
The Role of Immigrant Concentration Within and Beyond Residential Neighborhoods in Adolescent Alcohol Use
Social Isolation of Disadvantage and Advantage: The Reproduction of Inequality in Urban Space
In this article, we extend research on neighborhood social isolation by (1) examining residents of disadvantaged and advantaged communities and (2) considering the character of neighborhoods where people conduct routine activities away from home. We contend that social isolation is experienced by residents of both highly disadvantaged and highly advantaged neighborhoods because the two groups spend time in largely nonoverlapping parts of the city…
Black Collegians at a Rural Predominantly White Institution: Toward a Place-Based Understanding of Black Students’ Adjustment to College
This study examines adjustment differences between in-state Black students who are familiar with rural and predominantly White environments versus out-of-state Black students who mainly come from segregated, Black neighborhoods and larger cities. Focus group discussions highlight the role of students’ residential backgrounds, especially racial composition and rural status, in understanding their social adjustment and perceptions of divisions with…
