Identification of Acoustically Modified Mandarin Tones by Non-native Listeners
This study investigated identification of fragmented Mandarin tones by non-native listeners. Monosyllabic Mandarin words were digitally processed to generate intact, silent-center, center-only, and onset-only syllables. The syllables were recorded with two carrier phrases such that the offset of the carrier tone and the onset of the target tone were either continuous or discontinuous in fundamental frequency (F0). The syllables were presented wit…

Sixty years of bilingualism affects the pronunciation of Latvian vowels
For fifty years after World War II, Latvia was incorporated into the former Soviet Union. Although in theory the use of regional languages was not discouraged, in practice knowledge of Russian was obligatory. Since 1991, Latvian has again become the official language, and knowledge of Russian is widespread but optional. These political events have created a natural experiment in the effects of almost universal bilingualism on a language. To asses…

Word reconstruction and consonant features in English and Spanish
The word-reconstruction task (van Ooijen 1996) was used to investigate the contribution of the phonological root node feature [sonorant] to word identification. Experiment 1 tested its influence in English. In identifying target words from nonword approximations, participants had the least difficulty substituting one resonant for another resonant, thereby providing some support for phonological effects in word reconstruction. However, the contrib…

The Vowels of Stressed and Unstressed Syllables in Nonnative English
Nonnative and native American English speakers produced two-syllable words such as confess and confirm and three- and four-syllable derived words such as confession and confirmation in isolation and in sentences. The durations and formant patterns of the vowels were measured for the first two syllables of each word. In addition, the ratio of vowel-to-syllable was calculated for the syllable (con). The nonnative speakers had most difficulty with t…
Acquisition of the English Voicing Contrast By Arab Children
Children are typically more proficient than adults in learning the phonetic detail of a second language. The purpose of this study was to investigate the acquisition of the English voicing contrast as cued by voice onset time in syllable-initial position and preconsonantal vowel duration in final position in the speech of children whose native language is Arabic. The children, 24 to 135 months in age, were recorded producing minimal pairs differi…

The Effects of Varying Glide Durations On Diphthong Identification
Traditionally, diphthongs have been described as consisting of an initial steady-state portion, a glide, and a relatively short final steady-state portion. This study investigated the contribution of glides of variable duration, in the presence of steady-state portions of fixed duration, to diphthong identification. The three American English diphthongs /ai/, /au/ and /??/ were synthesized, employing fixed durations for the steady-state portions …

The Perception of Sub-Phonemic Phonetic Differences
In a preliminary study, Fry (1968) discovered that he was able to discriminate between mono-morphemic and bi-morphemic words of identical phonemic shape, such as lax v. lacks. In this study, 10 such assumedly homophonous words pairs were tested for subjects' ability to identify them. When total scores for each word pair were considered, subjects were unable to identify any of the word pairs correctly at a statistically significant level. However,…
